    Public transport

At the moment two hotels are beeing invaded by members joining the Convention. They are hotel Bologna in the city center and Botel Racek. Below you can find how to get there with public transport.

Vaclav Havel Airport -> Residence Bologna (Konviktska 5, Old Town):
On the Airport buy a ticket for 32 CZK and catch bus No.119 on the bus stop and go to the terminus station "Dejvicka". When you arrive at "Dejvicka", go into the metro station and go by metro A in direction "Depo Hostivar". The second station is "Malostranska" - leave the train here go up and find the tram No. 22 (direction to "Nadrazi Hostivar") and go to the tram stop "Narodni divadlo" (National Theatre). The last part you must go on foot.

Residence Bologna (Konviktska 5, Old Town) -> Prague Con place (Zitomirska 30, Vrsovice):
For this route you can buy just 24 CZK ticket. Go to the tram stop "Narodni divadlo" and catch the tram No.22 (direction "Nadrazi Hostivar"). When you reach the stop "Vrsovicke namesti" (after aprox. 15 minutes), leave the tram, turn the first street left and go up to the second street to shop on the corner (Svet deskovych her, big windows).

Vaclav Havel Airport -> Botel Racek (Praha - Podoli):
On the Airport buy a ticket for 32 CZK and catch bus No.119 on the bus stop and go to the terminus station "Dejvicka". When you arrive at "Dejvicka", go into the metro station and go by metro A in direction "Depo Hostivar". The third station is "Staromestska" - leave the train here go up and find the tram No. 17 (direction to "Sidliste Modrany"). After aprox. 11 minutes in tram, you will stop at "Kublov". The last part you must go on foot.

Botel Racek (Praha - Podoli) -> Prague Con place (Zitomirska 30, Vrsovice):
For this journey, you need just 24 CZK ticket, but the planned time is exactly 30 minutes (the time of 24 CZK ticket), so I recommend buy a 32 CZK ticket for sure.
Go the the "Kublov" stop and catch the tram No.3 (direction to "Vozovna Kobylisy") and go to the stop "Karlovo namesti" (a big Square with park). When you will be there, leave the tram and go down to the underpass and immediately up (you need to cross the road). Here, catch the tram No.22 (direction "Nadrazi Hostivar"). When you reach the stop "Vrsovicke namesti" (after aprox. 11 minutes), leave the tram, turn the first street left and go up to the second street to shop on the corner (Svet deskovych her, big windows).

    Last year's (2013) reports:

I must say, last weekend of July fits me well - this is rare part of year I could be pretty sure I'll be free to join the party
But, I'll try to squeeze in some other schedule, if happens so.

For example, 28th June, day when Gavrilo Princip, 100 years ago, shot Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo (which started chain of events leading to the outbreak of WW1) is on Saturday.

Or second weekend in April (as Battle of Arras started on 9th april 1917), to honour Bloody April.

*edited after Dan-Sam's very good idea to connect tournament to some important dates.

Sound interesting! For me almost every date can work as long I now it long enough in advance. I would however keep it in a weekend. National holidays are national and will not be the same in every country.

As a two year veteran of the Con and the ORIGINS attendee, I have some thoughts to share with you.

    1. There is a Doncaster meeting 20/21 of September 2014 which some of us will attend. That date plus high July temperatures plus Dan-Sam absence make me vote for a Spring date. However - if our Czech Friends would find a temperature "solution", which is not easy of course, we can stay with the previous date.
Any spring date is fine for my group except Easter and first week of May when we enjoy a long weekend 1-3. However, no pressure on others.

    2. Ladinek's Game Club is a perfect place with shopping option, but if more chaps attend, that place may get too crowded. I picture a place where we could play for two days and Ladinek could offer his goods for sale as well. This leads to another question:

    3. Private Con or an event open to public. If public, anyone who want to join, should first buy a plane for him/herself to play from Ladinek's offer. Why not?

    4. More attendees calls for a more organized, scheduled play, like they do at ORIGINS. There is a list of events written in advance on different tables run by game masters that last for let's say 2 hours. We have a privilage to enlist for events, with some gaps for third parties who want to join.

    5. Everyone should play with his/her own model and set of maneuver cards. But we shall have a common/public/sponsored/shop owned damage cards, tokens and markers. I remember Jan's headache. Mats: individual or common/shop owned. After play you just take away your toys and move away to another table.

    Thoughts?

Sounds very plausible Andy. You might have a taster table for people who would like to play but don't own rules or aircraft. Then if they like they buy and proceed to another table and join in the fun. Call the starter table Air School for the Uninitiated/flight school etc. People get a taster before they commit to buy. Just a thought.

    1. A spring date sounds like an excellent idea to me.
    2. Ladinek's lair has one more room at the back, where one to two big tables can be fit.
    3. Why not.
    4. I second this, and i would love to have more visible WWII this time. I think the super long dinosaur mission we kicked off with on Saturday just killed the WWII part - it came too late, when we were all tired ... my fault i joined in, i didn't realize it would take 4 hours. And also Dan-Sam was missing, he would help to organize that part.
    5. This depends on Jan, it is simply up to him if he wants to cook out of his bag.

Thank you for the points Andrzej

If the next Con happens any time in April or May next year, I am afraid I won't be able to participate, since I am going to be in the middle of learning for my final exams at the Police Academy. As my whole future career depends on the results, I simply cannot afford any such distractions.

The second half of June is a problem for me as well, since I am going to be the GM for Wings of Glory at the Grillhammer 2014 Con.

Jan is the spirit of the games in Prague, so his agenda is what we should take into account.

Absolutely, an event like this lives or dies on the passion and enthusiasm of the organiser, features that Jan has in spades.

So first half of June, July and August would fit? I too think your agenda is the one to look after but we need more details. So tell us where are you going to be every weekend of June, July and August! Just joking! But maybe you give us some dates and then the rest can see what they can do?

By the way, for me Prague is not a dogma. I can go to Dresden, Leipzig and even Opole too for Con in right term.

  17. #17

    Default

And this is another important remark. We talked about it with Sven in Prague.
As far as Opole is concerned, I think I would be able to arrange a gaming place at our Politechnic Boardgame Club.
Ladinek told me he knew one lady who is an active member there.

    Andy.

Isn't it better to keep or the location or the date? If we are going to change both it will take a while to get things organized. Is Jan also willing to make the move? As he had the most stuff he must be willing to move it. If we change the location I would keep the date. Although I do like the sound of "Prague Summer Con" and have no trouble returning to Prague.

Your other ideas Andrzej sound superb. Letting other people in is great and by organizing special games for them they learn the game on the spot. This also will seperate more seasoned players from new ones and as the day progresses they can eventually join up and play a game together. However a lot of managemant will be needed and less playing for the managers...
I think that if Jan didn't played during our first game he would have had even better control on it maybe (his management of that game was super by the way). Off course he wouldn't be playing... Defenitly at games for new people this will be neccesary. and by not playing you can explain and help both sides. Are we going to find people to do this?

Those missions are huge and need a lot of time, but I would not miss this epic balloon barrage misson.

Maybe we need two GMs for such a mission.

We solved five WW II mission, that's not bad at all. It wasn't a nice campaign like the A-H one, but on the other hand we needed to test so much things: Andrzejs new Africa mat, BoB and those great Eastern front repaints we used.

Another solution to skip those large missions, is that the shot down pilots start smaller missions with 2 or 4 gamers like we did with the first BoB mission.

    No problem for me.

Maybe for the huge games need two Game masters and more separate damage decks, but I feel able to host a WW I or WW II game with 4 - 6 gamers and play by myself... but to explain the whole stuff to a newbie that doesn't speak Englisch that well or German could be a problem.

Another problem canbe the fact, that I'm not able to play with/versus other GMs.

I flew only three missions versus Nightbomber this year and no mission with him together!

This is one of the most important points for 2014 for me: BOMBING SOMETHING WITH NIGHTBOMBER!

Well that is a bit my point. Sorry for beeing selfish but if I'm making a trip to Prague for this game then I want to play the game. If you let complete new players join that's fine for me but who will want to explain them all the rules over and over... I would like to play the games with you guys too rather than watching you explain it to other players and in the meantime play with people I don't know. Off course I can learn to know them but still the main goal of the Prague Summer Con was to meet up with players from this forum and their friends and relatives. I think that letting complete strangers in may be a bit to soon...

However a more organised way is needed to make the event more fluent. Like the limited time for games (which will allow for more switching between tables and games) and the "rules" about airplanes and cards.

But the main question for me now is WHEN and WHERE?

  23. #23

Guys i am not sure the newbies are a problem really. The Con was open for public and nobody came over to try the game out. I wouldn't expect crowds of newbies coming in next year. We even organized one evening for public in spring, and literally nobody turned up.

Lino is right - some public newbies would be fine, but there will not be probably any there. One or twoo, may be three, but that is all.

I see two problems with this:

    1) It's going to be *really* painful for him, and;
    2) You can only do it once -- the impact won't leave enough for a second go.

    Good point, Thomas.

2012 we had a hot weekend, too.

But if I now look outside it's about 20 degrees and raining - 14 days after the Con. A month before the Moldau flooded the Golden City.

Prague is very central - good connections with planes, trains & busses.

The time is ok, because the Polish youngsters are on summer holidays.

Same time (last July weekend) same place (Ladinek)?

There are some pros for the same date (the last weekend of July); one of them is possible Jan's absence in the springtime, Sven. Hot weather is the only factor against that date, but it can not be a decisive one. As we are rather dependent on what our Czech friends do or can not do that time, we should wait for their opinion

For me is the the last weekend of July the worst choice. I will probably out of Prague without possibility to join Con. Every other weekends would be better than weekends in the endof July and start of August. Let's try a Doodle vote - will see preferences of everyone who want to join.

Well for me anything aft of july or whole of august could work. I know I promised to be there next year and I going to try and keep that promise. However since I' m going to become father again in June it will depend on how mother and child are doing. So the later we plan the more chance I have to join. This time I'll come alone so I can join all the late night patrols in Prague center!

I think to leave the dates up to the main attendee's and organisers would be best, then its up to those from further afield to get the time off to attend. It is hard to please everyone just look at Aerodrome get together Doncaster 2014.

Here's hoping I can convince the wife it would be a great birthday present for me.

My apologies for my inactivity, I have been (and I still am) awfully busy in my job. Add school and other stuff too. And Dystopian Wars and Ingress.

@Skafloc - The Grillhammer Con takes place in June, usually the last weekend in June, at the airport in Skuteč. It is a con that originally started as a Wh40k/WFB event and then exploded into many games. Oh, and there is a heap of delicious food too. Much of it grilled, hence the name of the con.

Here are some pictures from 2013:

Anyway, there is a lot of news here on the site and I do not like some of the news at all. I may become a mere lurker or even slowly fade away.
