Hi.
I'm Mik the stick. I would like to comment on Wings of Glory WW2. I have the rules accessory pack and a Mk 1 spitfire. this site has provided me with a wealth of info on WOG. I have played the WW1 version once and the WW2 version 4 times. Thus far my skill as a player leaves much to be improved.
I am a bit of an expert on most things military, a proud boast indeed. I have made several attempts to write a WW2 set of air combat rules. My problem is I tend to go for too much accuracy resulting in a difficult to impossible game. A friend (Napoleonic gamer) told me of WOG, I researched it on the net and was not impressed. However after my first game I have given up trying to write a set of rules, this game plays much better than anything I have read about it.
The period I want to play most is late war pacific, which is the cause of my disappointment, the hellcat Kate and Avenger are not available yet. I have the models in 300 scale. I now know my I deck does the Avenger and Kate, the Hellcat needs an F deck so until I can buy one I will use my wildcat deck (D) with your extra speed card.
I think the core rules are brilliant, don't really like the ace optional rules, my friend is determined you don't change the rules. I agree and am happy to play the rules exactly as they are.
I think a very small set of house rules would make the game perfect for me. I may even post them in the future. My house rules would make everyone a little easier to shoot down. My one and only objection is the Japanese aircraft should be easier to shoot down. Late aircraft like the Kawanishi Shiden had armour self sealing tanks and a stronger structure then the Zero Kate and Val and require no alteration. For the Zero and others with no armour and self sealing tanks I reduce their points by 25% and round down fractions. The Zero becomes 12 points and the Val 13.
On the down side I have very few real criticisims of the game. On the plus side I have played and tried to play many flying games, I have played nothing which equals this game. It is really easy to play and fun. If you try to play with proper WW2 air combat tactics you have a chance of success, but even a plane like the 25 point Corsair won't help much if you get a Zero on your tail because you were stupid enough to ignore the fighter escort and go straight for the bombers.
An expert on most things military, maybe, but not wargaming.
