    Default Advice/help sought for newbie

    Hello everyone,

first off, I thought I'd posted this plea already but there seemed to be problems with the server as I tried posting before lunch, and now I've lost my second draft so I'm writing this for a third time....

I wanted to say how much I've been enjoying looking through the forum, and my son and I have loved our first forays into WoG. We've played a couple of sorties with a Duel pack and some extra aircraft and had an absolute blast so far, and now we wanted to try some more adventurous missions such as recce or bomber escort etc. We decided we'd build up some representative forces for a couple of periods of the war and then play some kind of linked missions/campaign.

So I was delighted to see the huge range of models in the WoW/WoG ranges and then gutted to read the up-and-down history of the game and see the prices on Amazon etc for the older models.... up to $500 for some aircraft

I have also looked at some of the kit maufacturers forum members have flagged up - I've ordered a pair of Pups from ?Varom, and PMed Michal about his SRAM kits, but I am rather nervous of making decent models in such a small scale and - to be perfectly honest - I'd rather be flying missions with my boy!

My plea then is whether (a) anyone can advice of a dealer who sells the older models at a reasonable price and/or (b) whether someone might have some models going dusty that they might be prepared to offer me. I'm especially looking for 2-seaters - maybe an RE8 and a Rumpler C.IV. I can't offer anything exciting to trade I'm afraid, but would of course be prepared to pay a reasonable price plus postage (I'm in the UK).

It's a bit cheeky I know, but like many forum members I have a son who is all-too easily distracted by computer games and I really want to capitalise on his current enthusiasm for the game. Any help you kind people can offer will be very gratefully received!

    Best wishes,

    Ian

Shapeways may offer a less expensive way to obtaining additional aircraft as well. Of course there is the issue of priming, painting and decaling them. But there is a lot of great ideas in the Hobby section here on dealing with Shapeway models.

Thanks guys, your thoughts are much appreciated. Keith I will PM you in a few days, and Horse I had looked at Shapeways but judging from the comments here on tht forum it seems it can be a bit of a hit and miss process, with some models needing major work to produce a decent end result. What's your experience with them?

I currently have two Shapeway models, an SE5a and a Handley Page 0/400. Both are WSF based and arrived in very good condition only requiring priming and painting. I am still in search of decent decals to finish. They are far lighter then official models, but that just means it is easier to mount the bomber. Just awaiting the stand and pegs to start bombing missions.

hi Ian try this shop http://www.ludocortex.fr/gamme-wings-of-war,fr,3,95.cfm currently has Rumplers Breguets and ballons. With the € £ exchange rate you might get a good deal.

!/144 direct is worth looking into, I got some O/400 decals from them some time back and I think they have some SE5a sets as well!

Dom is also a good source for more generic Decals.

eBay.co.uk currently have a Roland CII (the von Richtofen one which has no forward gun) and the American D.H.4 for sale. There are no bids yet. The seller is asking for £5 as an opening bid and £6 for postage on one. The seller lives in the Netherlands. I have never bought from the seller but if you keep checking eBay you may find something that you like.

Ian my local shop still has a few Belgian RE8's I could pick one up for you and send it for cost plus postage or you can contact them direct at:

    http://www.krackers.com/

They may have other planes in stock as well but I'm pretty sure they have the RE'8s.

Thanks again chaps - terrific advice all: I had spotted the ebay posts David and have indeed now got them on watch (altho I assume there is always the risk of forum members inadvertently getting into a furious bidding war over these listings when they come up!). And Don I will contact Krackers today to see what they have got. Would RFC patrols be tasked to provide cover for allied spotters? i could always repaint Belgian planes if not as I'm happier about repaints than building kits at 1/144 scale.

Last night my son and I took our 'crates' for a first foray over enemy lines: a combination of awful formation flying and incredibly bad luck with archie (I took a direct hit within minutes of crossing the lines and plummeted to the earth in flames, much to my son's amusement!?) meant that things didn't go as smoothly as I'd have liked... Bt he enjoyed himself, and the Hun were mightily entertained! I'll have to work out how to post some pictures.

As soon as we get a few 2-seaters etc we'll start our little campaign in earnest... Me with a new pilot

Don, thanks very much for the heads-up on Krackers, - a brace of RE8s (and a Lothar von Richthofen tripe for good measure!) has been ordered from the very helpful owner of the shop and I can't wait to get them!

    Best wishes, Ian
