Thread: Phurious Phiasco!

    Default Phurious Phiasco!

History will not bother to record the first Furious Fiasco, so I will. She took to the cold waves near Hunter's harbor in Arizona . . . all seemed fine and dandy at first,

Escorted by a Camel and an Fe8, she boldly cuts the waves, nearing the shore to intercept the Hun

A Short seaplane is launched to do some recon work over the coast

Good thing too! A pair of Gotha torpedo bombers were skimmimng the shore, heading to intercept the Furious!

Weak radio signals warn the Furious which launches intercept fighters

The Shorts stays on station tracking the Gotha approach

The lumbering Gothas do not even try to climb to intercept the Shorts, they are on a mission!

    Fur begins to fly!

Gothas relentlessly close on the carrier

    More Camels are launched

Note the ship advances one XD move per turn too!

The Gothas line up for the torpedo run - hey where's the AA? I got so caught up launching and positioning fighters I forgot to wake up the carrier! Tragic mistake!

    Its about to get messy!

Two torps are in the water and on course, the first Gotha turns to make a strafing pass on the undefended ship!

A lucky draw flames the Camel and the crew runs for cover

Gotha one continues to fire on the loaded deck . . .

Meanwhile the second Gotha makes its turn and the torpedoes make their approach

    And both hit!

Gotha two has success on its strafing run too, first smoking a Camel with the front gunner and then flaming it with the rear gunner!

Things get really ugly when Hunter convinces Clipper to roll a 10 sided dice to set a damage ratio and then draw that many damage cards, sounded good at the time, however two of them were the spiky "0" cards! DRAT x 2!!!!!!!!

By now its after 10:00 pm, Clipper's bed time well past, he surrenders to fatigue and self anguish over neglecting to wake up the gun crews on the ship. Since Hunter bought dinner and didn't gloat too much, the victory was given to the Huns.

Much to be rethought and revisited, but it was a fun night and it redeemed the idea of a full scale ship attack. Altitude needs to be addressed as well as reading up on AA use. Torpedoes need cards and markers . . . the list is long, but exciting!

    Gotha view!

Next time Hunter will have a harder time!!!!! Clipper recuperating . . . sorry about the duplicate pics, problems with my photobucket connections

    Fantastic AAR!!

Carrier action in WW I - incredible, David!

Terry - my deepest solidarity with this great torpedo run.

...and I don't speak about the destroyed planes on the ships deck.

The Kaiser will be proud of you and your brave crew.

Great to see the ship back in action, better luck next round. Can't wait to see the torp rules/markers you come up with.

What a massive air/sea action! Well done, David!

Nice AAR David - and in the alternate history of this action it looks like the Aircraft Carrier concept could be stillborn

    A very interesting AAR David.
I have found that it is not worth moving ships unless the attacker is something really slow like an airship.
This is because if the torps are aimed at anything behind the bow, no matter how the ship moves it will not get beyond the torp run simply because of the time it takes to transit the aiming point. I am working on how to make a torpedo run more difficult for ships larger than a submarine.

[sigh] Another CP "victory" brought about by Entente incompetence.

You always could, I know how cold and miserable Oregon can get (lived there in the 80's) You could come and help defend the cause from Hunter's scourge! There's a lot of good shopping year round sunshine for the significant other, I know a guy with a big house . . .

I may be a while -- getting over The Cold From Hell. Also, I think the desert there contains the mustard-seed plant which made my life in SoCal a Living Hell.

Lookin' for drawings . . . and a bigger table to play on . . . "drink me" or is it "eat me"? Or is it "Let's get small" . . . Clipper took the red and the blue ones . . .

Danke mein kamerade! If those John Bulls think they can waltz into the Heligoland Bight without even a 'by your leave', they got another thing coming! Which they received...much to their chagrin!

If Clipper would have used is seven starboard 5 inch AAA, it would have been more difficult. The cards and dice idea was spur of the moment, which was too one sided, in hindsight. I'm currently trying different scoring scenarios. Although, two torpedo hits amidship could/should be fatal for a ship of the Furious' size.

Next time Staaken's with two torpedos each!

    Back to the war college!

It looks like you had an exciting time! In the First World War naval A.A.A. was in its infancy. Ships had very little.

On my computer all the pictures have a banner across them reading "photobucket host. store. share.".

Yes there was I time I used them to host pictures but they turned on all of us and demanded big money to free them so we abandoned photo bucket and some went on to a class action lawsuit, I just dumped six years of photos and family and moved on. I have all them on backups somewhere anyway. . . still don't trust off site storage - including the cloud . . .

I agree Dave. I keep all my stuff like that in house, and Jim has a backup for me which updates every night to a backup which updates to a backup backup stand alone computer every so often.
