Thread: Belgian Pups

    Default Belgian Pups

Does anybody have any info on colour schemes for Sopwith Pups in Belgian service please? I've got a side view of a fairly boring green/CDL scheme from "The Belgian Air Service in the First World War" and a poor picture of half a Pup of Escadrille 5 at the moment, and that's it.

I assume this is the half you've got, but just in case.

    "Vanilla" PC10 finish:

AFAIK the Belgians only got about half a dozen Pups though, so there probably just isn't any variety to find....

Yeah, that's the one Dom. I know they didn't have many but was hoping they may have tarted them up a bit more than that.

Drawing a blank on anything more elaborate - the Windsock has four going to 1e escadrille in summer 1917, so the thistle logo is a possibility (introduced when they started getting HD1s in August '17) but I'm only finding plain PC10 photos.

Tried my fave site for colors by nations, but no pups, sorry. A Strutter and few others though, might make a few from the examples?

Thanks Guys. I think I am going to have to settle for slapping a comet on the side and be satisfied with that.

As an afterthought on that one, I've seen it claimed that the fuselage roundels were overpainted in black (not brilliantly from the looks of it - the centre dot looks darker than the rest to me, which doesn't rule out an overpaint, but indicates it wasn't fully opaque if so) before the comet was painted on, rather than that just being the usual red=yellow=black on orthochromatic film. I'm not sure that I'm convinced, but it is at least a little variety.

That's interesting Dom, I was wondering about that myself especially if you compare the tonal values to those of the wing roundels which weren't painted out

Hmmm, nothing from our Belgian members - It's all gone quiet over there.....

I'm always wary about comparing fuselage and wing tonal values - glare on the upper wing is so common in WWI photos that the wing is often not far off looking white, whatever its real colour. On balance I'd probably black out the fuselage roundels, but as much on aesthetic grounds as because I'm convinced either way.
