    Exclamation Another Russell Smith Classic!

    G'day All!
We havent had any WW1 Art recently & I found this one over on the Aerodrome Historical site & really liked it.
It depicts a battle between 57 Sqd DH-4s & Albatross from Jasta 18 in 1917 when the DH 4's were intercepted on their way back after a bombing mission. 2 DH 4s crashed & one was captured but they did manage to shoot down one of the Albatross.

Great to see a more unusual subject given an airing Barry.

Nice painting. They obviously need shooting lessons from skipper, my son, who loves flying the old DH4. (and always ends up shooting me down!)

Very nice artwork, thanks for sharing.
It reminds me of a similar painting that was published in Life magazine in the mid 60s; they were doing a series on WW1 (Probably 50 year anniversary)
and it had some really stirring artwork. My Father had clipped out all the articles, and saved them. Sadly, I they came up missing when we cleaned the house
after my Mothers passing. I'd love to find that stuff again.

    Great picture.
Nice tight formation flying with the rear gunners covering the six with crossfire.
    Just the ticket.

That's the goal; of course, it doesn't always work. I just finished reading Osprey's AEU Jagdgeschwader II (Berthold). Apparently, they became quite adept in breaking the bomber formations apart, particularly smacking the AEF's First Day Bombardment group repeatedly. That said, the book notes that despite the losses they inflicted on the bomber formations, JG II failed to prevent the Allies from completing their missions, and in the end, JG II had little real impact on the ground battles being fought below.
