What originally drew me to Wings Of Glory was the WW1 planes. After reading this thread I might have to also expand into the WW2 era! My wallet is going to hurt :-)

Welcome to the Wallet's Hell, my friend. Once we get in there's no coming back. You've been warned.

Just a note: the OD over Gray Doolittle B-25 is general worldwide US Army standard, and with replacement markings (star and bar instead of early star) can pass for anything until the end of B-25B/C/D service.

...and I updated this overview too. The main changes:

    • adding a complete airplane pack #5
    • adding planes from AP #5 to campaign overview
    • adding "Invasion of Normandy 1944" and "Bombing campaign over Germany 1943-1945" to campaign overview

Please, if you will find any mistake, write it here. Thank you

Messerschmitt Bf109F-4 (Luftwaffe Channel Front, Luftwaffe Western Desert, Luftwaffe Eastern Front)
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb (RAF Channel Front, RAF US Eagle Squadron, RAF Malta)
Focke-Wulf Fw190A (Luftwaffe Channel Front, Luftwaffe Tunisia, Luftwaffe Eastern Front - snow camouflage)
Bell P-39 Airacobra (D model USAAF New Guinea, D model USAAF Guadalcanal, Q model USSR Eastern Front)"

    Love this post...
    109 F or G, 100%
    Focke-Wulf 190A 100%
Spit VB, 50%. a third version of the spit might be a bit overkill until later series.
P39 Airacobra would be great, I believe an Australian version could be used instead of the USAAF New guinea version? yes no? im not sure of that.

I think the P38 would be cool, but generally Ares and Nexus would pair it with another opposing twin engine fighter... what would that be from that era?
I would love to see a Mosquito as well in there somewhere.

1 fighter I would really love to see form the late war period is the Messerschmitt 163. Would be great fun alongside the future B17s...

With the exception of the Me 163 (I'd prefer Me 262s), I love everything about this post.
    • Bf 109s -- F & G (especially Gustav!) are are must-have
    • Fw190s -- can't get enough of the "Butcher Bird," in fact, I would have prefered an 'A' to the 'D' (not complaining) that we got
    • Spit V -- a personal favorite, but perhaps overkill... what about an early Typhoon or Razorback P-47?
    • P-39s -- certainly widely used, but I could see people arguing for a MiG for those Eastern Front battles
    • Mosquito -- the "Wooden Wonder" would be... well... an outstanding addition to the range

Hey... I guy can dream, right?

I just noticed that in the original post with all the theatres and the appropriate planes, only 1 Dewoitine D.520 is included, that of R. Thollon, in both the Battle of France, and Norway campaigns. Where would Le Gloan and Stella's minis best fit?

  23. #73

Good point Evan. May be Mediterranean theater for both + Italy 1943-1945 for Stella?

Updated the brief overview of the historical realities too.

Would love o have all of the above mentioned plus for he allies a twin enine job, the Beaufort. Longest serving, in that it fought in every theater of WW2; used by many nations, great for Russo/Finnish war; More VC's won in this plane type than any other, etc. One could go on and yes it's a bit of canon fodder but for such a widely used aircraft in all theaters it must have a chance, mustn't it?

Not forgeting the Devastator to compliment the Kate someone mentioned above too.
See you on the Dark Side......

In the Osprey "Thunderbolt Aces 9 et 15th Air Force"
page 38 : it is notified that the FW190 was not sent to the Italian front.

So should they be removed from the list in the original post for the Italian front 1943-45 ?

Absolutely. Units SKG 10 and SG 2 equipped with Fw 190s version A4/U8 were fighting over Sicily, near Salerno and Anzio.

Hi All - new here (but been into WoW for several years) - anyway couple of add tos/suggestions (for such a list):

Westland Whirlwind - faster and more heavily armed than the fighter variant of the Mosquito IIRC

    Macchi C.200 Saetta
    Macchi C.202 Folgore
    Breda Ba.65
(perhaps 1 or 2 Fiats like the G.50)

    Bloch MB-151 & 152
    Potez 630 twin-engined heavy fighter/recon bomber

Polikarpov I-16 (or is this already expected?)
    Yakovlev Yak-9

PZL-24 (flown by the Greeks, Poles, and others)

P.S. And big thanks to Daniel & others for this great reference...

On a related note is there something similar for the original game cards - i.e. if you want to use 3rd party miniatures and check what aircraft are covered in the existing game card packs?

Just wanted to say Daniel for your great work on this thread.
As I am just starting to dip my toe into BoB your info on aircraft suitable for that has resulted in me grabbing a Spit & Hurricane from Xen here in Oz & a 110 & Heinkel from Keith.
    Damn shame no 109's anywhere!

Daniel have you seen the new planes coming down the pike? Any idea when they will be released? Hoping for a re-release of the early ones, Wildcats, Zero, Spits and 109s. I believe it will keep the WWII side of this game going.

If remember well, there will be a BoB Deluxe Set soon (Q1/2016?) and a Midway one some time after BoB (Q4/2016???). So It is a halfgood and halfbad news, right?

One thing that's always confused me about this thread ... can somebody please explain what definition is intended for the word "hypothetically" when used (at the beginning of the thread) to indicate whether a particular aircraft might have been used during a particular theater/operation of WWII?

"Hypothetically" refers to a hypothesis, which is a working theory used as a potential base for solving a problem. For example, let's say you came out of your house one day and saw all manner of different fish scattered up and down your street. One hypothesis might be that an insane seller of fish spent the night throwing his excess wares around your neighborhood. Another hypothesis might be that a waterspout touched down on a lake near your house, causing numerous fish to be sucked into the sky and subsequently deposited near your doorstep.

With that in mind, how could a particular model of aircraft hypothetically be in a particular combat situation? Does "hypothetically" in this sense mean "the aircraft in question might potentially have been stationed in the area, and therefore might potentially have been in a particular battle in that area, but no records exist either confirming or denying such a possibility"?

I was a newspaper journalist for a decade, and so word use matters to me, which is partially why I'm wondering about this. But also, I want to stage an air battle over the African deserts, and I'm trying to figure out which planes I can justify using!

    Tally ho!

I think I, can explain it. First of all, let me say sorry for misunderstanding - English is not my natives language and some words we use in different way in Czech (for example, there is only one Czech word for well and good etc.).
    OK, here are my answers:
    • Battle of France, Spitfire Mk.I: No Spitfires in France, but many just across the Channel.
    • Italy, Stukas: Stukas were in Italy, but 'em other versions (later versions).
    • Italy, CR.42s: Italians were part of Allies during Italy Campaign, German Falcos were used as antipartisant on Eastern Front. But yes, Germans used them, but elsewhere.
    • Italy, Falcos II: Italians were Allied during this campaign, no Fascist Falcos.
    • Normandy, German planes: Germans used newer planes than these, but yes, it could be there. May be...
    • Bombing Campaign over Germany, Mitchell: USAF usually used much heavier bombers than B-25.
    • Bombing Campaign over German, Bf.110: Germans used them, but much earlier. Not effective, outdated during this campaign.

    Is it clearer, now?

PS: This list is only for inspiration. It is difficult to mix planes in right teams, according to history. For example, if you have only one Hurricane and one Dewoitine, it should be impossible create a mission for 8 players. But when you add a Spitfire or two (from English airfields) the problem is solved

Again, thanks for the reference material. Makes it easier for scenarios to be put together.

    - Invasion of France 1944 : French Douglas A.26 were involved with Dewoitine D.520 on south of France against German troops and cities on France west coast (Royan, La Rochelle).
you could add the Dewoitine D.520 (Tholon) in Invasion of Normandy/France 1944.

Here is a great link about D.520 (and other planes) all in English and French :
    http://ww2fighters.e-monsite.com/pag...e-d-520-4.html
During the liberation of France, a few examples abandoned by the Germans were used in ground attacks against the isolated German pockets of resistance on the Western coast. After the allied landing in Provence (15th August 1944), the famous pilot Marcel Doret creates the 1st fighter group FFI "Doret" (Internal French Forces) with D 520 recovered in the Toulouse factories, Morane-Saulnier.
On November 30th, 1944, the group FFI "Doret" is integrated in the regular Air Force with name GC II/8 "Saintonge". It is engaged in ground attack misisons and escort of diving bombers Douglas A-24 over the Atlantic coast.
