Book Title: Eddie Rickenbacker: An American Hero in the 20th Century
Author: W. David Lewis
ISBN: 0-8018-8244-3
Category: Biography
Format: Paperback and Hardback
Summary: This is a lengthy biography – 550 pages of text – on America’s WWI ace-of-aces. Starting with Rickenbacker’s childhood, the author takes the reader on a journey through the ace’s WWI service, interwar period, WWII service, and postwar life. Throughout the vignettes of combat sorties, interaction with crewmembers and fellow fliers, business dealings, and professional and personal pursuits, a more complete portrait of Rickenbacker emerges – both his successes and failures, strengths and weaknesses. This book is more about the man than the ace. It is a biography in the true sense of the genre than a military book profiling the combat experience of an individual. For those generally interested in Rickenbacker, this would be a good book. For those interested solely in his WWI experiences, there is approximately 100 pages of coverage.
