Thread: Official Pfalz D.XII Painting Thread

  1. #1

Default Official Pfalz D.XII Painting Thread

I noticed that there was not an official thread for the Pfalz Dxii anywhere, so I thought I would start one with pix of Vfw Ludwig Marchner plane of Jasta 32b.

I have featured this plane elsewhere, in more detail, on the shapeways forum. I intend to paint at least one or two more at some stage.

Pretty fantastic paintwork! Cool plane as well; glad to see someone is putting them on the table.

Oh yes, nice work everyone, here's mine from Jasta 35.

I think the D.XII is such a great looking plane I just had to have some.

Jasta 23 to follow (when I get my long awaited laser printer and can make decals again).

Lazer printer eh! I bet that bit into your model budget a bit.

Thanks Rob. Good fortune has been on my side. A friend who owns a company has just updated his offices and rents his laser printer now so the old one isn't wanted. I've generously offered to take it off his hands. I think the toner may be expensive but should last a while as I only want it for decals. Hopefully I'll pick it up soon, I've got new models that need decals made and already started designing some four colour lozenge in anticipation.

The toner will be pretty pricey, but if all you are using it for is decals, it'll take many many many many many mini's to run it out.

    Another nice paint job Matthias,
I can't even see the joins where you slotted the wing decals around the struts.

You just have to paint the wings in the dominate lozenge color (dark blue for the upper wings and ocre for the lower wings) and take a lot of time to cut out the decals.

    Shapeways (late-style tail fin).
I do have a pair of unbuilt Reviresco metal kit Pfalz DXIIs, with the chunky square early-type tail fin; but I wanted to try lozenge decals on grainy Shapeways wings, to see how they would turn out.

Finally my first DXII is finished

The lozenge is home made (Zoe gave me the pattern ) but I printed it myself.
It turned out ok. A bit dark perhaps but ok.
    So here it is.

Glad you're still alive. I think, the way the lozenge turns out on the Pfalz was well worth the effort.
BTW, there's an aircraft card available for Kammerer in the download section.

I know the feeling! My first attempt with home made lozenge was on my Fokker DVII entry. Well worth the effort as now you (and I) know you can do it!
I hope to see more lozenge covered planes coming out of your factory!

Now should l buy a couple of Pfalz DXIIs from Shapeways, to go with all the others? Mmmmmm

I don't know how easy it would be from the modeler's end, but if people posting to painting threads could put up a small patch of their decal sheet, I could match the colors better.

Check this thread for a quick overview of how I do lozenge camo on the plane cards: German Five Color Top Lozenge Camouflage

I download a copy of your posted picture, and attempt to match the color by sampling. Consider that the original lighting for the picture was not good, the camera not calibrated, the image handling application not accurate, and then the whole post-to-the-forum process and my computer on the download, and we might get any color on the plane card.

    Just a thought.
