Thankyou for your kind comments Rob, I'm planning on doing Lt. Hans Karl Von Linsingen and Lt. Werner Steinhauser next, regarding Steinhauser's Dr.I I'm going to paint his early version with the red band round the fuselage, does anyone know where I could get hold of any decals for Steinhauser?

Nice looking Jasta 11, Mark! Not sure about the decals, though...

Afraid I can't help you there either Mark. I did the one with the yellow band and red cross which I painted by hand.

I could use these too. I did a Steinhauser repaint by hand awhile back and ended up selling it on ebay - it was certainly tabletop quality, but I wasn't super pleased with it. Decals would be great.

On topic - I've been painting a bunch of Dr.Is this past week, stay tuned for pictures!

Here are a few pictures of a mixed flight of Jasta 15 planes I completed recently. Leading the pack is Berthold in his Fokker D.VII, with von Hantelmann on his wing in an Albatros, and Veltjens and Marconnay supporting.

And a view from above (yes, I know Berthold's lower wing should be blue...I haven't decided yet whether to do that or claim artistic license).

I actually am in the process of redecaling Marconnay's SS D.III as von Ziegesar's, so I can use Dom's Marconnay decal to repaint a Pfalz, which I got in the mail last night. More pics to follow when the flight's rounded out!

Thanks guys! I'll try to post some better pictures when I have more time - I've been painting so much in the past month that I haven't had time to photograph everything! I have several Dr.Is that need posting - Klimke, Raben, Jacobs - plus Otto Fuchs' Albatros and Udet's black-striped D.VII!

It's sort of exhausting just thinking about it, but what can I say, I really love planes.

They are another fine lot of aircraft Austin.
Your love of planes is quite apparent in the time and effort you are putting into all these birds.

And thanks to you too Tim.

Great work there Austin. After long deliberation I am taking the plunge to give my Jasta 2 Dr1's a make over. (Sparky's to blame after seeing his magnificent job on his)

It's only a hunch, but I sense a trend developing here Tim. Also could you put me in touch with the groundsman who looks after you grass? The chaps here would like a game of cricket.

Well, I finally painted my Jasta 12. I still have to rig most of the planes, but... That's 5 Albatros D.III and 7 Albatros D.V, plus one AEG C.IV, as I was inspired by this picture:

Very nice Eric, job well done! I hope my J12 turns out this nice. I still have a lot of work to do, plus I'm doing some Dr1' also. If I may ask how did you do the 6 pointed black and white star? I've been contemplating how I will do mine as I've not been able to find decals. Anyway, beautiful aircraft there and thanks for sharing.

That star is hand-painted, which is not so difficult as it might appear.
Step 1: lightly draw the symbol on the plane with a fine pencil
Step 2: paint the white triangle over the pencil line with a small fine brush
Step 3: draw the black triangle, leaving gaps in the lines where it passes "under" the white one
Step 4: correct any smudges with your basic fuselage colour (don't overdo it)
During painting, keep a second brush at hand in a cup of water to correct mistakes before the paint has time to dry.
Your paint must be well diluted (as thick as milk), and you must be careful not to keep too much of it in the bristles of your brush (swipe on some tissue paper before using).
It also helps if you practice beforehand on a sheet of paper to get the hang of it.

The black swastika on white field on Paul Billik's plane was done that way.

The planes are all WSF from Decapod and Colinwe, IIRC. I added the radiator pipes with thin (0.5mm diameter) brass rod, and I'll use 0.08mm nylon fishing line to represent the rigging.
The worst step -for me- was the preparation and application of decals, as there are between 7 and 11 of them per plane. To say it tried my patience would be a major understatement...
Well, that and preparing the 12 flight stands plus printing and cutting B and J maneuver card decks!

Since the sun deigned to appear over Paris today, I lined up Jasta 12 for a few shots.
This time, the planes in the pictures appear in their true colours.
Alas, my camera doesn't have enough depth to shoot them all when they're aligned...

Thanks much Eric. You've outlined the way I thought it would have to be done. I could have sworn I had seen a decal somewhere but it may have been for a larger scale. My only change will be to use a 'Jet' mech. pen for the black. The tip is .05 and makes sharp crisp lines and the ink is high quality archival. Anyway, thanks much, appreciate the advise. And yes, diluted paint and several coats is the way to paint these craft imo. I usually do 3 to 4 coats of base over the prime. I find the color is much richer that way and you never run the risk of obscuring any detail.

I suppose for that it would require fewer craft in the line... wait... that's just ludicrous! Never fewer planes, always more!
