    Default Jasta 5 Albatros D.III

These are all Ares planes. Planes are flown by the following pilots. The pyramid eye in a circle is Hans Berr and Josef Mai. White with red vertical stripe is Heinrich Bussing. Bavarian checked tail is flown by a number of pilots. Tan body with white line is an unknown pilot. Grey with a white X is Jupp Cremer. The green with black and white square is Waldemar Christiansen.

More great Jasta 5 planes to follow.

  5. #305

    Default Jasta 5 DR.1s

Another group of Jasta 5 planes I have worked on. The plane with the vertical white stripe connected to the white horizontal white was flown by Josef Mai. The plane with the red, white, and black stripe was flown by Willi Schuster. The other Dr.1s were flown by various pilots. I tried to show a shaded paint job on the tails as many of these planes had flown with Jasta 6. They were sent to Jasta 5 and repainted.

    Default Jasta 5 Fokker D.VIIs

I was lucky to get a copy of Windsocks July /August 2005. It had the article "Green tails until the very end" by Glen Merrill. This article made it possible for me to do the following planes.

Default Jasta 5 hacks and a Pfalz.

In a way these are a couple of my favorite planes of the Jasta the "Hacks". One was a repainted LVG C.V. The other was a captured Bristol F.2B. It was repainted and the words "Nicht Schiessen! Gute Leute" or Don't shoot good people on the wings.

    Yup!
Several had a crushed undercart, which had to be bent back into some sort of decent shape (one or two are still a bit skewed, but OK).

I have 8 more red "von Richthofen" F-Toys D.IIIs for Jasta 11 at the end of April 1917 (with lots of Red!) but want to do other projects first; plus I need to fly these boys before 'replacing' them with others!

    Default Jasta 5 Albatros D.II

If you have followed my twisted journey here on the Jasta page I have worked to complete many of the planes from Jasta 5. The are the last two groupings of my journey. Here are six Albatros D.II painted in the colors used by Jasta 5 and most the Jastas of the time. Jasta 5's only differentiation for planes was the use of white and black letters and numbers. The most interesting part of painting these planes was learning about the different factory paint jobs applied to these planes. I was lucky to find Dan Sam Abbott's article, The Camouflage and Markings of the Albatros D.II Aircraft.

    Default Jasta 5 Halberstadt D.III

My last Jasta 5 element is composed of Halberstadt D.IIIs. I think I am guilty of colorful paint job syndrome as I have saved the least colorful grouping for last. They are painted in the standard factory paint job.. The only differentiation for planes is the application of white numbers.

I have not yet tried diluted PVA. I usually spray a coat or three of clear gloss depending on the surface. Sometimes a little sanding or filing. Then a flat black primer before painting.

Enough planes of the same Jasta to fill out a flight when I run a game at a convention?

I usually cap off a game at 12 pilots, any more is overcrowding the table. Even at 12 is gets a bit confused when folks are moving their planes. So I think my goal for more Jastas/squadrons will be 6 plane flights.

Thanks Matt. I'll repaint this Kempf when the new one comes out. Hmmmm, who should he turn into?

Frommherz had reverse tail colors and I did find a photo with a Kempf similarly done. Could do an easy tail swap for Kempf but I'd rather have a different plane.

Peter the planes look great. I love Jastas, squadrons, and escadrilles. I agree with you about convention game size. I stretch to 14 but more than that gets too busy especially if there are new players involved.

I've totally missed this thread. Wow really every entry is excellent. I feel the raising of a dangerous desire (Why should I have one of each plane, when I can have a dozen for every Jasta )
