Lovely work Peter. Doesn't matter that the whole Justa isn't there, as you said there are enough for a good showing!

Look what you've done: now I'll use the two Valom Albatros together with WGF Hippel and Böhmer to start a Jasta 5 collection

Tim is the Jasta Masta that started this. He keeps posting photos of more and more of his work. Now Jim is doing it too. Now we must fall in line. Resistance is futile.

A 3 Halberstadt CL.II unit based on the ARES Schlasta 21 plane. 2 easy repaints that give the original a very distinctive look. I did these on my own with no historical thought at all. I just want players to have an easy time knowing which plane is theirs. If I can get any more of these they will follow in kind.

I think I remember seeing this Schlasta depicted with different stripe colors than the Ares model's - perhaps on the Wingnuts page with their CLII models, Peter...you may be on the right track here! Regardless, the variety makes for excellent eye candy

    All the best,
    Matt

Oooo, I forgot all about checking the Wingnuts page. I have a great book on the Schlastas but they didn't mention a period when the unit was so dressed. They did have a profile of the plane ARES did though.

The Wingnuts site shows a blue striped Halb. The yellow is wood, not the ARES bright yellow. I also found another profile in green. The wings also have camo in these profiles so I'll do that to my new colors.

Thanks, glad you like them. Sorry to tell you but the black outline stripesare gone. None of the plates/photos I have seen show any outline so it went away.

You defaced that beautiful plane - just for the sake of accuracy!!!

Here are the 2nd set of three Halberstadts in case I filled the game with 12 pilots.

From what I have read the unit had their numbers in a blue diamond. The official plane is with black or very very very (x many) dark blue to where I couldn't tell if it was blue. I overpainted the diamond in white, then again in a dark blue. Some rub on numbers and now 3 different planes that can be identified.

Then modified a card I found (but I don't remember where), a little 'paint' and the cards now have the proper arcs and #s.

Thanks, Jim. The camo was done using a trick I found on YouTube. I used a tiny bit of sponge to dab on the paint. I couldn’t reach reach everywhere with it so I had to d9 those parts with a brush.

Crikey, haven't seen that technique used in years. My brother used it on his WW2 tanks when we were kids.

I don’t do enough stuff for which one would use an airbrush to justify buying an airbrush....hence the hand tool version.

Btw in word working there’s this question / answer thing....what’s the difference between a power tool and a hand tool? The power tool allows you the ability to ruin a piece of wood quicker than a hand tool.

    Default Jasta 71/Jasta Greif

Here is my 'mythical' Jasta prepared for this year's Origins gaming convention (whose theme is MYTH) - based off Jasta 71 (red and white striped tails) combined with red and white fuselage coloring. The planes are two Fokker DVIIs, one Siemens-Schuckert DIII, and three Fokker EV/DVIIIs. The griffons are D&D figures 'repurposed'...

    Default Jasta 6 Fokker E.Vs

I was able to pick up five Fokker E.Vs at Origins. Thanks you Ares. I started repainting to do them up as Jasta 6. I was able to match the camo colors without too much problem and painted out the black band on the planes. I than made up some decals and the results came out pretty nice. The planes represent those flown by the following pilots.

    Black band Oblt. Erich Loewenhardt

    White Band Ltn. Richard Wenzl

    Lighting Bolt Ltn. Emil Rolff

    Straight Arrow Unknown Pilot

Diamond Ltn. Wolff or Gefreiter Kurt Blumener

    No markings Unknown pilot

I thought I would share what paints I used to repaint these planes. I used all Vallejo paints. I did not go with a set ratio but mixed till I thought it looked right.

First step was using German Camouflage Dark Green 97 and I used this to cover the black band on the fuselage and the top of the vertical stabilizer.

Next I mixed yellow ochre 121 and German Camouflage Dark Green 97 which I used to make the lighter camo splotches on the fuselage. I tried to find the pattern in the lozenges and copy the pattern. I was not perfect in the pattern but it gave a good effect. I should have mixed a little less green but again it still works. I used this color to paint out the black edge on the lighter color on the wings.

After this I next mixed hull red 146 and German Camouflage Medium Brown 145. These colors I used for red brown lozenges on the fuselage and the top of the vertical stabilizer.

The last mix I did was ochre brown 127 and German Camouflage Medium Brown 145. This mixture I used to paint the black on the wing edge next to the browner area.

The final touch was painting the edges of the horizontal stabilizers edges black. This made the tail stripes look like they wrap around the stabilizers in a much more natural fashion.

I am no Picasso but you see by playing with the paints a little you can get a great result that looks nice on the your planes. Don't get hung up on this being absolutely perfect
