Thread: Official Squadron Painting Thread ( Entente )

Two years ago I painted a SPAD VII for the Lend Lease raffle. It was Armand Pinsard's SPA78 black body SPAD. I really liked the look so started painting four SPA78 planes for myself. They have sat hidden away for almost two years at 80% completion....until last week! I stumbled upon them while cleaning up and packing and just had to finish them. These will get to fly at Fall In in a few weeks.

    Lovely paint jobs, Peter!

I've got the 'Miscmini' decal sheet for these panthers, but don't have plans to attempt them just yet.

    Thanks Tim.

I did my own decals a year and a half ago well before Kevin came out with his set. If I add to this escadrille I'll get some of his.

So I get to see them in person in a few weeks. Hope I get to fly one of them depending on the number of people.

Not a real life squadron but a squadron for the OTT campaign.

All serial numbers are from real aircraft. The first two planes (2 Wing RNAS) in the ground line up are accurate paint schemes, the green / mahogany plane is suitable for a some Nieuport 11 / 16 but probably not serial number 3994, the light blue and the dark blue / white stripes were both inspired by later RNAS Sopwith Camels and the one with the red is made up. The other planes are 1 Wing but it's possible the first two were transferred to 1 Wing after the Gallipoli campaign.

One the ground the planes have the following pilots that flew a Nieuport 11 with the serial number on the model:

    William Vazie Simons
    Kenneth Stevens Savory
    Ernest William Norton
    Daniel Murray Bayne Galbraith
    Roderic Stanley Dallas
    Redford Henry 'Red' Mulock

    Cpt Keith Muspratt (H)
    Lnt Arthur Rhys-Davids (I)

    I love the vingete Ezekiel.
We actually did that last fight of Voss as a game, and the aircraft kept getting in each others way and blocking line of fire. Voss on the other hand could not miss. It was a close run thing.

Peter Pig pilots (my first), including a famous "turn right" one.
    Homemade fuselage decals.
miscmini Belgian rondels on the Yellow and Black cowling planes.
Paint match is mostly a 2:1 mix of Vallejo model color German Camo Dark Green and Brown Violet. Decal touch-up with Deep Yellow, Flat Red, and Black. Undercarriage and props various colors (burnt umber, mahogany, leather brown, etc).

Fictional squadron of Sopwith Pups for the next OTT campaign - Bold Young Men (BYM).

Three of the Pups are those for which Valom provides decals, one is C215 54 (Training) Sqn and the other two are fictional schemes inspired by Sopwith Camel schemes.

From the bottom left, back row:

Arthur Stanley Gould Lee, 46 Sqn RFC (Valom decals), C215 54 (Training) Sqn (Valom decals - and hand painted extras), fictional Pup inspired by RNAS 9 'Stackard' (Valom and miscmini decals)

    Front row, from the bottom:

Oliver Stewart, 54 Sqn RFC (Valom decals), fictional Pup inspired by 'Suds', light blue, Camel, Edwin Harris Dunning - HMS Furious (Valom decals).

For the OTT I need - as much as the readers of the AAR - visually distinctive planes. Even at that, when there's more than two per side I frequently end up with the wrong cards / damage on the wrong plane. So, every little pit of visual cueing helps.

These are cracking looking planes Paul and I look forward to seeing them perform in the coming campaign. I particularly like Dunning's colour scheme. I'm sure Dave has a pup with the cdl sides to the fuselage as well. I have 4 Pups to paint and I'm positive I will have one with the same colour scheme, it might even have a V on it's top wing.

Looking forward to seeing those, Dan. I'm sure they'll be as deadly as your planes were in the last campaign.

The PC10 with CDL sides is a nice combo. I look forward to seeing your purloined Pups (I assume you're still playing RFC and haven't desert to the RNAS). No doubt there will be a 'V'.

C Flight were seconded to the RNAS for a time in either the last or previous campaign, I don't remember which. It was only to show them how to fly to the RFC's high standards you understand. That was when we ended up borrowing a few of their Nieuport 11's, I can see a similar thing happening either with the Pups or better yet the Triplanes.
