    Nakajima B6N2 Jill : 14,9 / 10,8

According to these dimensions, do you think the B5N2 Kate would have a heavy fighter base and the B6N2 Jill a single fighter base ?
Or as the B6N2 Jill is quite close to the Kate, it could also have a heavy fighter base ?

On a HF base, the B5N2 Kate would look like the Ju.88 A-4, being the smallest plane on a medium bomber base.
And on a single fighter base, the B6N2 Jill would look like the Do.17 Z, being the largest plane on a heavy fighter base.

Here is a picture comparing the limit between single fighter / heavy fighter / medium bomber bases :

    Aichi D3A Val : 14,4 / 10,2
    Messerschmitt Bf.110 : 16,25 / 12,1
    Dornier Do.17-Z : 18 / 15,8
    Junkers Ju.88 A-1 : 18,4 / 14,3

Here is my humble contribution to this thread full of excellent models. I have to start off by saying that there is so much BS out there regarding the color schemes and painting methods used on Kates that flew at Pearl and even Midway. Even reliable references such as Osprey, Air File and (the not so reliable) Wings Palette. All paint on these planes was done with an airbrush with the exception of the cockpit windows. I used Mr. Color paints in all cases. After paint, all planes were coated with a nice thick cost of Mr Color Super Clear GXIII gloss at 1/3 clear coat, 2/3 Mr Color Leveling Thinner. Panel lines were all done with Flory Models of various colors. Then I hit them with some Mr Color Super Clear Semi Gloss to allow for oil paint weathering. Final clear coat was Mr Color Flat Clear on all green base planes. The metal based planes were final coated with a 50/50 mix of flat and semi-gloss to let them shine a little bit. Insignia were all Misc Mini, and in most cases, I had to cobble the decals I needed for tail codes. They were a mix of Micro-Scale and Misc Mini with lots of chopping, mixing, matching and even modifying. There are over 140 individual decals on this batch of nine planes! If anyone has any questions about the methods, let me know. I could rattle on and bore you all for several paragraphs. I'll spare you and keep it brief!

I'll start off with a pre-war B5N2 from Kaga, tail code VI-321. This is how the Kates from Kido Butai were marked until they departed for Pearl.

After Kido Butai got underway, some of the planes were painted in various camo schemes. The planes on Shokaku were air brushed with a mottled dark green as visible from above. From the side, the natural metal was left. It is interesting how in this case, they masked the hinomarus, creating a "halo effect" around them. Here is EI-310 from Sokaku.

Here is a great side shot of Shokaku planes heading back form Pearl. Note on the first one the really good view on the halo effect on the wing.

Next is BI-312 from Soryu. These were airbrushed with a mix of brown and green, mottled over the entire upper surface with no halo around the hinomaru.

Up until sometime in the 80's profiles of Fuchida's place were based on his verbal description of it having red and yellow stripes. This is known to be incorrect, but I thought it looked very cool. You can still see this incorrect profile in Osprey books, Wings Palette and other places. Not too long ago, some footage of the above plane showed up on Youtube, finally giving us a real picture of it. Anyway, here is the fantasy one. It took 38 pieces of tape to mask and paint this tail.

Here is BI-310 of Lt Joichi Tomonaga from Hiryu. This is how the plane would have looked as it launched for the attacks at Midway. The paint was really starting to wear off at this point as it had no primer and was field applied at sea.

Next are three more standard late war machines. They are from Ryuho (DIII-307), Zuikaku EII-333 and the land based Okazki Kokutai, Okinawa 1945.

This was a fun, and sometimes challenging project. Airbrushing those very fine lines on the camo schemes took more than a few tries to get it so I could live with it. This model of plane was in action throughout the entire war, so I needed to span the conflict with paint schemes. The more I looked into it, the more confusing it got.

Awesome, Dave, as your pieces always are.
and REP inbound. Hopefully not by Devastator ...

When I get around to getting some Kates they will most likely all be 'simple green' *

    Fantastic 'Kate's, Dave!

    Rep Gun Jammed!

Interesting note on the background research showing up Fuchida's inaccuracies - his interviews formed the basis for many of the historical mistakes which were taken as canon by Western historians and authors for decades. It's great to see dodgy history overturned by diligent research.
My 1/700 "Fuchida" 'Kate' has the same incorrect red/yellow stripes as you described!
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!

Tim (and other interested folks), If you want to see the real AI-301 taking off, here is the video I spotted it on. It is at minute 5:10. Probably taken around the time of the Ceylon raid.

The book “Shattered Sword” is what really opened my eyes to how much of what Fuchida said simply wasn’t true. A great book if you want to understand the minute by minute account of Midway. Not for the casual observer for sure.

Thank you all for the kind words. As I always say, some positive feedback seems to make me try harder. I really appreciate it!

This is a great (and TIMELY) thread!

I'd picked up a lot of Warlord's "Midway" planes from their Blood Red Skies series a while ago and, having just re-read "Shattered Sword", had hauled them out for viewing; and was contemplating what to do with them. I like what I'm seeing. I PARTICULARLY like the airplane cards posted herein.

Are there similar posts for the other "Midway" combatants?

    Thanks Mike, this is informative.

But where do I find the "official" plane stats? There is nothing on the ARES site.
