Default Why did you choose the setting chose?

    Hey all,
I just signed up here. I dabbled a little bit with the Dawn of War set and although I liked it I wasn't completely sold on it, mostly due, I think, to the fact that I had initially wanted to get into the WWI game. Now My interest is piqued again and I'm looking to get into it a little deeper, this time in the WWI scene.

That being said, when I take a look at those "special" planes like the HE-111 I feel a real pull towards the WWII sets!

Why am I choosing one and not the other? Why not both?
Well, I can easily say cash flow prevents choosing both!
As for the first question? Not that easy. I hold more of an interest in WWII, it is the setting I pick for the wargames I play, I have read more about it than about the First Great War. Why not pick it as the option for WoW? Well, I'm not exactly sure. It may have something to do with the selection of planes that came with the Dawn of War set, I wasn't totally hooked on them. Which ones would I have chosen? Not really sure there either.

Why am I looking more towards the WWI set? I don't know as much about the First World as I should, but I think I get a feeling that is, I don't know, maybe embarking on a great adventure? The feeling I get from the few memoirs of infantry and sailors is one of doing something great, a sense of adventure, going off to places only read about in books or tales. The planes themselves look "Fantastic", the pilots were adventurous, brave and some may say a little bit crazy, to get into a contraption only recently invented, made of wood, cloth, wire and affording very little protection. While the men on the ground suffered the depravations of trench warfare, these flyers were high above, somewhat removed from the real war. Fighting was like the duelist or the gunslinger, man vs man.

Maybe that's why I'm heading down the the WWI route.

Not to say that the brave pilots of the second World War were any less brave, noble or crazy, but I think that, maybe, technology took the edge off it.
I may be way off the mark.

Ultimately my point is to ask the question of you all, What system did you choose and why?

I do have an image in my head of group of spitfires trying to shoot down a HE-111 escorted by some 109's!

Nice intro, Chris Welcome to the forum.
I play both systems, to be sincere, but if you ask me why I chose the WWI image here on the left side of the screen, the answer is simple.
There is much more about cameraderie and knight-like-hood in this theatre of war than in the second one. And in this forum we are all/wir sind alle comrades/kameraden

You pretty much nailed all the reasons for me. Was never drawn to either war previously TBH, but something about the Great War aviation, the machines & the men who flew them caught hold of me. The more I learn, the more I WANT to learn. Unlike you, I'm not drawn to WWII though...the machines seem too "reliable" too "powerful" & I don't get that feeling of "up close & personal" as the older planes.

Plus, TBH I don't think I would feel comfortable playing as anyone but the allies. With WWI I don't feel that same sensation of moral/ethical unease. WWII players please take no offense. Just a personal quirk.

In any case, welcome! Hope you stick around for the REALLY GREAT war!

*Edit* One other reason I just thought of is the planes themselves, both the design & the decoration, every bit as colorful as the men who flew them. Look at that thing over there as my avatar <---- Now tell me that isn't dead sexy!

When I started playing WoG there was no WW2, it was the painted mins that got me into the game and the fact it was a great game to play. I was initillaly slow to get into WW2, my sons were playing WW2 before I caved in. For me both are different games. WW1 is more of a social game whereas WW2 is more competative.

Welcome Chris. Its your choice. As others I have both sets but if you perfer WWII go for that. If you look at the WWII section you will see 1/144 scale section with a number of planes there. Also AIM products have great models of WWII planes. Go for the one your funds will allow you to get. And the most important thing is HAVE FUN.

My interest in it WWI aviation goes back to the days of building 1/48th Aurora kits. I think the first kit I built was a dark candy apple metallic red DrI. I was thoroughly hooked. Then came Dogfight and later an SPI magazine game whose name I can't recall. That was followed by Fight in the Sky/Dawn Patrol and that was followed by AH's von Richtofen. Then came the Nova games books and the 1/285 C&C miniatures. That set me to thinking and I designed Blue Max to make use of those planes. Blue Max, for obvious reasons, was my go to game and I kicked up my modeling to 1/72nd. Then came WoW/G with prepainted planes and a good system and now I play that on our twice monthly game nights when it is my turn to run a game.

    Thumbs up

G'day Chris & welcome to the 'drome.
Please do sign on in the Report for Duty section so everyone can note your arrival at the Front.

As for your query, my interest in WW1 goes back to seeing "Dawn Patrol" at the movies before I was a teen. Then books, Airfix kits, Historical research, Warhammer 40K gaming & a natural progression to Wings of War.

Welcome to the site, Chris. I dabble in WGS, but I'm primarily a WGF player. I, like you, started as mainly a fan of WWII aviation, but as I've played the game more, I've developed the desire to learn more about the first combat aviators.

Chris I see your dilemma. I got into both. Each having there positives. With the WW1 all you need is two planes. In the WW2 you should have at least two planes each. WW1 is an actual dogfight as WW2 is a turning game and using the wing-man. I love both but lean more to WW2 as I like team play rather than one on one. I think you will really like the WW1 as the planes are more maneuverable than the WW2 planes. You can get the starter kit from 12-7 Games and try it out too see without spending too much money. Let me know how it turns out.

    Welcome aboard Chris.

I ran a poll this year asking what 'flavour' of Wings of Glory members of this forum prefer, which just closed this month (see http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sho...Wings-of-Glory).

60 responses were received and the final break-down was as follows:

70% prefer to play WGF (42)

    40% play WGF only (24)

    11.7% prefer WGS (7)

    6.7% play WGS only (4)

15% play both WGF and WGS without preference (9)

3.3% don't play but enjoy the game in their own ways (modelling, collecting, etc) (2)

So you see Chris, you are in good and plentiful company expressing your preference for 'doped fabric' over 'stressed aluminium'.

    Cheers,

    Carl.

    My answer is very simple.
I was introduced to the game by Christophe who showed me the WWI aircraft.
I was not aware of the WWII option, and by the time it was available in models, I was too committed to WWI to consider it an option.

Welcome to the drome Chris, for me WWI planes have a certain something that WWII don't, still like the WWII aircraft though (P-47 being one of my all time favorites)but there's something about those first fighters that draw me to them.you will find stories like Werner Voss taking on what must have seemed like a whole squadron,or pilots who crashed into trees and simply climbed down. great stuff.anyway enjoy.

I see your way up north. Is it easier to get to the states by boat?

I do both -- each has its charms (WW2: More variety in firepower; WW1: More variety in units). I do shade towards WW1 because it's easier to teach to new targets^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hplayers. :)
