Here is Ltn Albert Bigg's DH-2 from 24 Sqd. He just hopes no one prangs it whilst he is on wound leave in Paris. He just loves this aircraft that has earned him 3 Victories.

I have started working on my first model ever - Airco DH 2.

I disassembled the whole thing first
    1. Top wing+top part of the kite - it has bars mounted that connect the top and bottom
    2. The bottom wing and bottom part of the kite
    3. The gear part
    4. Machine gun is just squashed in the cabin by a peg - pull it out
    5. The motor with the propeller is just squashed in the cabin by a peg - pull it out - i broke the propeller off by mistake

I added very thin Humbrol 103 on the fabric parts just to tone them and make them look dim.

A large part of the cabin is metal made, so i think i may leave it the way it is, just paint the plastic part so they match.

When I received a DH.2 (RFC - Capt. John Andrews) from my brother it sort of whispered to me (rig-rig-rig). That open tubular fuselage is great and I thought let's give this a try, but what to use and how to go about it? Although heavy, I thought 32 gauge wire was a good fit with the already heavy Ares fuselage. This made installation easy since the wire is easily cut to length and ACCed into place.Click image for larger version.

ID:	187436. After that I thought I would start in on the wing struts using my left over monofilament thread (came with the Minicraft 350 scale Titanic). Since it is wound on a piece of cardboard instead od a spool, I could cut off straight pieces which could be cut to length and also ACCed into place.Click image for larger version.

ID:	187437. I wanted to repaint struts so I figured I would do that before I got to far along with rigging. The Airco rigging is complicated and rather hard to figure out from kits and photos. I did what I felt confident about and also made my task a bit easier by not doing control cables except for the wing ailerons. For that I pin drilled the upper wing and inserted a small bit of 32 g wire along with the Monofilement and ACCed in place.
Although I would like to add other control cables, I don't want a 144 scale static model, I want to be able to grab it and put it in play without destroying cables that would be all over the craft. I think it turned out ok. Unfortunately the photos show how the repaint accentuates the thickness of the Ares struts, but to the naked eye it looks faily good.Click image for larger version.

    Thanks!

Yes, I have cards for all six 24 Squadron kites, but not for the weathered 32 Squadron machine.

Since I now have more than 100 repaint planes without cards, I'm targeting repaints for which I already have cards made up.

Cheers mate - I took your advice in the end and went with the blue numbers and blue struts, but I had a winged claw decal and just had to put it on, to balance the number decal just for the aesthetic, the jury is still out on that ahistorical moment on my part.

Thanks Rob, I saw 3 of the Ares DH2's go for Ł102 each on Ebay not so long ago and decided I was never going to get an original so this was my only route. Lots of dilute PVA but they are reasonably smooth.

Neither did I as I started to paint up a couple of Pfalz E.IIIs, which I just found out don't make our timeline.

I guess you could use them as Vickers Gunbus?
