I recently visited TVAL in New Zealand and took photos of their Be 2c and 2f (as well as everything else in the hangar!).

I have put them up as albums - general photos of the machines themsleves and closeups of the 'fiddly bits' on them. See http://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/album.php?u=942

Really useful set of of pictures there Wayne.
I wish that amount of detail hac been available to me when I did mine.
May be room for a bit of retro modification if I ever get the time.
    Thanks for posting.

One interesting thing about all the pics is that it shows just how many different versions of the B.E.2 are available out there already in model form.

RAF BE2c by jbmacek - stunning model - Sealed with Klear & a couple of coats of watered down PVa then Under-coated with white (Humbrol 34 acrylic)
Engine cowling Humbrol acrylic light grey (64), the rest is GW Bleached Bone. Decals are by Dom then applied & also sealed with Klear; top coated with Humbrol Acrylic Matt Cote (49). Drilled & split the roundel decal to fit around the woodwork - and very surprised that worked ! Crew by Peter Pig.
German gunner used (different pose to Brit) grafted a Lewis gun on to replace Parabellum and eased him into place by cutting the top of a cabane strut then glueing it back in place.

Nice work everyone, some great looking planes.

John, how did you prep/paint your wings to get this great see through canvas where you can see the top wing roundel? It's just like it should be.

Hi Ian, I use a single coat of 1:1 PVA:water mix all over,
    then I use humbrol acrylics.
103 linen, 34 white mixed to make the linen look new (rather than light aged which 103 looks like to me) then I added a few drops of water to thin the paint just a little, it is literally two or three drops, then mix and see how it feels. If it is too thin, there is not enough pigment to get a good consistent finish.
finally photograph with strong sunlight the other side
Don't over paint it. I am not after a super smooth finish, these are afterall semi scale representations of the aircraft and if you paint them till the grainyness goes, you can double the scale thickness of the wing.
this is approximately 2mm:foot so 0.5 mm =3 inches!

    Interesting John.
It works very well. I have been experimenting with watering down my paints and doing two very thin washes instead of one coat covers all, and it gives you far more control over the effect you want. as you say it also keeps things in proportion and the reduction in paint keeps the aircraft's performance up on the games table.

Thanks John. I've tried mixing the Klear polish with acrylic paint and had similar results. It makes painting the struts unforgiving as any paint on the wings blocks the light and spoils the effect. I can see from your picture you didn't have this problem. When I finish 1918, I can see a BE2 at the top of the shopping list.

I have to say, the design by jbmacek also helps, as it has a lovely thin wing profile
If the basics aren't right, the best painter in the world (not me) can't get a good result.
If the design is excellent, even an average bloke (me) can get a really nice finish.

Thanks guys. I put on one coat of Valejo Buff, then painted a brown streak where the wing ribs were, then another Buff coat so the ribs are quite subtle but just noticeable. In a lot of the photos you can see through the canvas so I was trying for that effect.

I finally got my Shapeways finished - I absolutely hated this model.... the paint just wouldn't stick! Although it did allow my to find an amazing base primer recommended by the pro's at Tamiya (It's not a Tamiya product either!) But one coat will seal up those porous white plastics and really bond the primer to the UFD kits. I only know the Japanese name for it at the moment but once I find out its chemical name I'll share it as you'll no longer need to use the white glue trick.

Nice BE. Priming Shapeways can be challenging. I start with a couple of coats of Clear Krylon. Then a flat black for my primer. Some planes need more, some less. I haven't tried the watered white glue. Sofar my lazy spraying does it for me.

This primer Tamiya recommended is incredible...... I just airbrush it on and it locks the pours down tight - no need to sand either and gets rid of the grainy finish of the white plastic.
