    Howdy Yall,

These all look very cool, well done! I am thinking that everyone is using decals for the non-pre-paints, is that correct?

Keep up the great work, it is making me feel like a deadbeat for having my Als just sitting on the shelf awaiting their time on the workbench :-D

Smile Official Albatross D.II painting thread.

I was suprised that I could not find an official thread for the D.II as I was sure others besides myself had done some Shapeways or other makes.

Anyway with the advent of 3 D.II's in the new releases I thought you might like to see how close I got my Shapeways one to the official release.
I actually prefer my slightly more "wood like" fuselarge colour to the Ares one but thats just me!

    Great looking D.II Barry!

I like the more natural wood varnish color on your kite than the yellow on Ares' kites.

Hi chap's here's my humble offering of the Albatros D.II, it's an official Ares Manfred Von Richthofen's scout, which is nice but I decided to add some of Dom's Decal's to the model to make it stand out more, as the miniature to me looked way to dark.

Love the DII craft. Nice job there Mark. Reading the 2 Osprey Albatros Aces titles it seem s that painting/ staining the wood fuselage was done on more than a few craft. Really like your interpretation.

    Default Franz Graeser's DII

Here is a picture of my first attempt at a WoG repaint. I wanted to change the Szepessy-Sokoll rather mundane DII into one of the 'more' colorful planes flown by the Austro-Hungarians (based on Martin O'Connor's Air Aces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire 1914-1918), and I was taken by Graeser's cool great horned owl emblem, so I thought I'd give it a go. Vallejo acrylics were used throughout, and the plane was sealed after painting with Testor's Dullcote spray. Hand-painting the owl was a bit tedious, but I'm pleased with the result. After seeing some of the discussion on wood-graining, I may go back and try some of those techniques in the future.

This was my first attempt at using my new phone to take pictures, as I move into the 21st Century with new technology so there was no real thought for backgrounds and shadows, but the pics turned out okay...as I get used to the process, I hope they'll improve.

    All the best,
    Matt

Thanks, guys - it's a bit of a 'fantasy' plane, as Graeser's plane shown in O'Connor's book is a DIII, but I really enjoyed painting it, and it will look nice flying with the other Austro-Hungarians. I'm sure I'll do some others as I move forward collecting these little gems!

    All the best,
    Matt

You just go on what you feel like painting. Who is to say there was not one of those. We only get the ones that were recorded anyway.

Thanks, Rob! I'm of the same sentiment as far as what's recorded versus what might have been. Graeser IS mentioned in O'Connor's book as one of the few having flown the DII - I wanted to keep that accurate, at least -, and since there are a couple of his planes depicted in the color section, I thought I'd have a go with depicting a third one to play with...

    All the best,
    Matt
