    Hi Mike

Thanks for the kind words and the Rep! - much appreciated

I possibly might have more Albatros scouts that you have collection aircraft - can't be certain, though!

All these Albatri of mine are 'Shapeways' (except for one 'Syborg'). None are 'F-Toys' - that company only ever made three Albatros D.III models, and three SPAD XIII planes; no other WW1 models.

    Super pair!

Just FYI, Karl Emil Schafer never flew with Jasta 2 - the plane you have painted so beautifully served in Kasta 11.
He went from there to Jasta 11 to fly for MvR

Tim, Thanks very much for the info. I'll amend the Plane Card to reflect that. Out of curiosity did Schafer only fly D.IIIs in Jast 11?

As far as I know, yes.
I've never come across any evidence for Albatros D.IIs in Jasta 11 (though they must have had some, being formed before the D.III reached the Front in late December 1916).
Schafer transferred in after MvR's arrival, and MvR brought his Jasta 2 D.III with him; subsequent deliveries to Jasta 11 comprised D.IIIs.

MvR made 6 kills each with a Halberstadt D.II & Albatros D.II & 1 between the two groups in an Alb D.III, Feb through March 1917 after the Alb D.III was grounded; looks like Schafer had 9 in the same period so was he was likely flying similar types during the period ?
Though looking at his victory list on Wiki only 1 was not on a Alb D.III and that was with a D.II in Kasta 11.

Tim, Dave Many thanks for the information.

The period of the Albatros grounding was I believe 27 Jan - 19 Feb 1917. However MvR is recorded as using a Halberstadt D.II between 9 Mar and at least the 25 Mar before reverting back to an Albatros D.III for his first kill on 2 April. This extended period may well have been due to the time that it took the Armee-Flugparks to convert Jasta 11's D.IIIs to the new wing.

Schafer was posted to Jasta 11 on 21 Feb and scored 9 kills between then and 24 Mar, the exact same period that MvR was supposedly using his Halberstadt. I can't believe that a less experienced pilot would have been given a better machine than his Staffel Leader. Also why would MvR have reverted to a Halberstadt (with a single gun) when the Albatros D.II was in service and had replaced the Halberstadt. Also wouldn't the Halberstadt's be the D.III by then?

The only reason I can think of is that Jasta 11's Albatros D.II had been replaced by the D.III and sent on to other Jastas and the only available type was the older Halberstadt. However MvR recorded a kill in a Albatros D.II on 6 Mar and was flying a Halberstadt D.II on 11 Mar only 5 days later. That would have been a remarkably quick turnround for an entire Jasta's planes to be swapped over.

It is possible that the D.II kills recorded by MvR between 11-25 Mar were actually scored in a Albatros D.II and the records/paperwork is at fault. If that is the case the Schafer might well have been flying a Albatros D.II for his first few kills in Jasta 11.

Either way I am happy with my Karl Emil Schafer flying his D.II for the OTT campaign.

    Thanks guys.

The radiator is a decal I made for the J30 Pfalz DIIIas I did. Luckily it also fits the late DII here.

Well, I have new French and Germans to face off now so somebody new has to hit the dirt. But this also means I'll have a new plane with a positive first outing!
