Still going through my official Wings of War/Glory 'spares' and decided to repaint my extra von Keudell Halberstadt D.III.

As have others on the forum I chose a bright blue scheme for this Halberstadt. Rumour has it that Oswald Boelcke flew such a machine, however authoritative sources have discredited the story.

Perhaps in the alternative reality of a Wings of Glory campaign a virtual Boelcke could pilot this Halberstadt as he leads Jasta 2 into aerial combat with the RFC?

    Nice job!

I too have a spare Keudell, and I too had settled on an "overall blue" scheme.
It's a long way down my queue, though.

Nice one Carl. The overall blue is a nice look. If I ever get another Halby to repaint its a must.

Thanks to all those who have contributed to this thread over the years. I recently bought a Shapeways Halberstadt D.II. When I looked in books I couldn't find much information about colour schemes. There were either dark photographs of a purple and green camouflage, or a beige colour. So this thread provided inspiration. I have gone for a pale blue underside with a camouflage upper. The camouflage uses a dark green and a lighter colour. Being restricted in the colours I had available, the lighter colour was created by using different colours in different coats of paint. When I've got the markings on I'll post of photograph in this thread.
Thanks again to all those who shared the results of their painting.

Wow, Alex! Those are the most beautifully done Shapeways models that I've seen. It's FUD for me from now on. Great work!

Shapeways (RAF) Halberstadt DIII in the livery of the Halberstadt DII of Jasta 25. When it got to painting time I realized that (1) the decals with the initials were for the Halberstadt DII of Jasta 25 which probably never had Halberstadt DIII and (2) I had the Shapeways DIII but I could just as easily had ordered DII (same combat stats just a minor modification on engine exhaust). So there were supposed to be the planes of Hauptmann Friedrich-Karl Burckhardt (letter B) and Ltn Eric Schutze (letter S), but only in fantasyland. So, here are two Halberstadt DIII for unknown pilots with surnames beginning with the letters 'B' and 'S'.

The reference to Jasta 25 DII:

I'm not sure my Nieuport 11 pilots share the same enthusiasm, Pete. Fortunately they won't appear until mission 5-ish (August 1916). Perhaps some of my Seadogs will make 'ace' by then to help even up the odds.

Halberstadt CI.II 14258/17 for Seefrosta Flanders. My first lozenge camo, was a bit of a chore and a couple wrinkles but overall I'm happy with it. Repaint of a Schlachstaffel 23B, lozenge camo homemade from File Section, white lion decal by miscmini, some of the iron crosses from aerodrome store. Seefrosta only used this machine for about a week (temporary loan to fill a gap) and Rolshoven complained about its weak engine Hopefully it will run good in my games.

Thanks, Burton. A little time-consuming but not too bad I suppose. I left both wing undersides with their pinkish lozenge but painted over the white stripes.

    Looks superb.

You said the lozenge was home made transfer but do you mind me asking how you did the body, is that a transfer or stippled painting? If painting it looks amazing and how did you do it?
    Cheers

John, I took a 23B (in the background, I'm pretty sure the fuselage scheme is a decal from Ares), painted over the 5s then used tweezers holding a small piece of foam to layer on various colors.

Seefrosta celebrated the day they got their Maybach-engine Rumpler. There's a rumor this is in the queue.

Chris thanks for the info, I wondered if you had used a sponge, you've made an excellent job with the colour matching.
