As an Italian speaking native of Trieste, then under the Hapsburg Empire, Giorgio Pessi left when it became obvious that Italy was going to join the Entente. With Austro-Hungary declaring the death penalty for those it deemed traitors, Pessi along with many of his countrymen, was forced to change his name to avoid the fate of being shot if captured and became Giuiliano Parvis, only changing it back once the war was over. He was credited with 6 kills. Towards the end of the war, Parvis along with many others were withdrawn from frontline service due to a number of high-profile executions of POWs carried out by the Austrians. Instead he was sent to the USA to demonstrate the Caproni Ca3 bomber, where it was it was claimed that he even flew it under the Brooklyn Bridge.
