Thread: Official Fokker D.VII painting thread

One thing I will in the future is to copy the schematics into Corel Draw, use the line tool to create an outline of the desired lozenge section, print out on plain paper, cutout the outline and check for alignment with the model, adjust the outline until it fits, superimpose the outline on the lozenge, make the decal and cut out along the outline.

Very nice DVIIs Paul. I have the Jasta 23 book, some great schemes in there to paint up. Well done!

Thanks. My plan is 3 more Fokker DVII (Valom), 3 Albatros DVa (Valom), 3 Roland DVI (Shapeways) for Jasta 23. I also have the Jasta 30 book and I'm planning 3 Fokker DVII, 3 Albatros DVI, 3 Albatros DIII and 3 Pfalz. I have homemade decals of the 'witch' (Hartmann's Fokker DVII) and the 'fox chasing the rooster' (Albatros DVa for Otto Fuchs) already made for Jasta 30.

Close ups of my Valom Fokker DVII - Josef Muller (Swan) of Jasta 23 and Eduard Ritter von Schleich - CO of Jagdgruppe 8. I even out the edging between the upper and lower wing surfaces and changed it to a lighter shade, which to the eye blends in better - will also group with Stark's Fokker nicely too. The photo colour balance is off and I couldn't seem to adjust it back to the as-it-appears-to-the-eye balance (e.g., the 'yellow' lozenge bits on the top wing are more orange than it appears, black highlights on Schleich's aren't as strong as they appears - oh well).

If you have the Schmaling book on Jasta 23 you might notice the error I only saw when it was too late. On the top of the fuselage there's a notch where the lozenge goes further back in the centre while the black continues to where the horizontal stabilizer meets the fuselage. The black on the sides of the fuselage should be even with the black of the stabilizer where it joins the fuselage and not where the tail fin joins the fuselage. I only noticed after I had the crosses in place. Could have easily fixed it at any point before that but fixing after would have meant re-making decals and re-doing the fuselage lozenge. Oh well.

Two more Fokker DVII from the Aeronaut books (in the foreground - the background planes, LTn Josef Muller and Oblt Eduard Ritter von Schliech, were posted earlier)

    1) White Fokker = Ltn Heinrich Seywald, Royal Bavarian Jasta 23 (acting Staffelfuhrer 29 May 18 to 2 Jun 18 and Staffelfuhrer afterwards).

    2) Orange Fokker with the witch = Ltn August Hartmann, Royal Prussian Jasta 30 (Jul/Nov 18). Hartmann called his plane his 'Hexle' (little with in the Palatine dialect).

    Thanks, guys.

    Perhaps it’s Harry.

So, last night, just before going to sleep I realized I forgot to do the dark blue outline on the horizontal part of the tail of Harry’s plane. Will attend to that shortly.

Nice D-seven. I like the green-yellow-black Lozenge. From a distance it blends perfect into the (back-)ground.

Pretty planes, indeed, Paul! Jasta 30 has some stunners - I have had my eye on the book by Aeronaut that covers the Jasta for some time now...perhaps it's time to get it an paint up a couple of planes...

    All the best,
    Matt

    Thanks, all.

Florian, I find the Valom wing lozenge decals quite bright, but these do seem to work with the orange paint scheme. Matt varnish to tone down the decal helps too.

Matt, the Aeronaut books are pricey; so I have to churn out more planes to lower the price / plane for the books. These last two the yellow/white stripe and Holthusen are actually in the Jasta 23 book and are based on a photo the author got after publishing the Jasta 30 book. The profile of Holthusen's plane is in the Jasta 30 book but not the top view. The orange wing unique to the Staffelfuhrer.

The yellow/white stripes are black/white in the Pheon decal set. However, the photo in provided in the Jasta 23 book shows the 'yellow' or 'black' stripe is not as dark as the black cross on the rudder. I went with yellow but black would have been easier for contrast with the white.

    Question for all.

I am getting ready to take the shapeways plunge. Looking at doing a Fokker DVII in the Josef Jacobs black. I am looking around for color references and the question I have is the bottom of the wings and plane. Was it completely black or was the bottom the light blue that was common? Or was it something else?

Does anyone have any decals for this scheme? Or a file I could use to print out some decals. Not having much luck making one up.

    Thanks,
    Dan

'Osprey's "Fokker DVII Aces volume 1" has it as overall black, top and bottom, just like his Dr.1s.

Light blue was very rare for Fokker D.VII undersides - only the first couple of batches had any blue, and then only on the fuselage (only the first three planes had "Fokker Streaky upper / "light Turquoise" lower" wings (Windsock Fokker D.VII Anthology 2) - all others had lozenge).

Photo evidence fails to show the underside (as always!!!!!).

I might have a spare set of "God of the North Wind" decals - mehusla 1/144 Direct did them, and I have a stockpile of them purchased in his closing down sale. I'll have a look when I'm next at home.

Thanks! Yes, there is not much photo evidence of the bottom of a lot of planes. Leaves to a lot of creative "This looks Good". If you have an extra set of decals I would love to get a sheet from you. I appreciate your help!
