Rep gun jammed - SPADs are my favourite planes...
Oh & 42 million other Ruski planes as well - sheesh...
Well Done!
Looks pretty good to me Holger.

Thanks! It was the first time for me to work with such small decals, applying the tail decals was not as easy as expected. I want to cover some of the issues later with overpainting. I was unshure for the correct yellow, the sources pictures showed many variations, my attempt was to mix a yellow which appeared yellow with a tend to a light brownish depending on the light source.
Great color choice, Holger! Looks lovely
All the best,
Matt
Great job Holger. Curious like Ezekiel about what color you used?
Excellent job!
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!
A quick and dirty repaint of a Baracca SPAD XIII to create a wingman for him in the shape of Fulco de Calabria's (cammo) SPAD XIII & match the old Nexus card - helped out by some natty fuselage decal's from Guntruck.

Always good to see extra recruits for our Italian Airforce Dave.
Well done that man.

Another great addition to the SPAD XIII thread. Bellissimo!
Nice job Dave (but then I would say that )
Run for your life - there are stupid people everywhere!
Not sure where else to ask this. The Official Release of the Baracca Spad XIII is a tan color like the French Spad VII. Did he have a Spad XIII that color. I see lots of Baracca Spad VII in that color and 5 color camo Spad XIII with his horse marking on it. But I cannot find any good reference for a tan colored one. Any advise on where to look?
Thanks!!!
Dan, I can't find any canvas 'tan' SPAD XIIIs for Baracca. The only profiles I can find of any of his SPAD XIIIs are in camo, online Wings Palette, Aircraft of World War I(Herris&Pearson), Osprey Italian Aces and Italian Aces of World War I (Schiffer).
Pete, thanks for checking all of those. All the research I did showed a camo Spad XIII. I am confused on why the Wings of War Series I Spad XIII of Baracca is Tan. It doesn't have his trademark Stallion on it either.
The secrets of Italians. Mysterious!
Great painting David, Holger and Dave!
I also love the SPADs
"Bravo" David, Holger and Dave and all the others !
By the way, you probably know this Spad with the original decoration of Samuel Kaye 94th Aero Squadron , has anyone made it here on a scale 1/144 Wings of Glory ?

Found this blog, and a black & white image of a Baracca SPAD XIII:
Rambles in the Air - The Sign of the Black Horse
Scroll down and view it off page, as it is scrunched on my phone. But, the camo is obvious to me. The bottom wing has mottling that is too much like camouflage.
However, there are color photos of the restoration of a SPAD VII at the bottom of the article, in yellows...

Not seen it before Bruno - interesting but it's post war so not something I'd use on a model.
There were several other "Show Birds" in the 94th as they adopted individual paint jobs.
"Jeff" Jeffers' "Sunbeam" is third from left, to right of Kaye's; Leo Dawson's "Little Joe" is to right of that.

i think those lovely red, white and blue spads would be perfect for a post war what if scenario.
Too bad they waited until the end of the war to go with the showbirds paint jobs, would be nice to have more colorful allies to fly with!
From this page:
Is there any truth to that? Seems counter to experience elsewhere, but maybe it was the particular paint used by the 94th?Although striking the pilots of the 94th Aero Squadron quickly found out that the performance of their planes suffered because of the extra weight of the paint needed to apply these extravagant colour schemes!
Might be a good fit for T&T! Some of these schemes are beautiful.
All of you paint experts. I am repainting some of the recent Eddie Rickenbacker Spad XIII Ares planes. Can anyone match up the weird sickly looking brown color they used for the light brown. Particular on the center of the top wing. I have the dark brown, light greeen, and dark green all pretty close. Cannot figure out what in the world a close match for the light brown would be. Looks like it might be a fantasy flesh tone or something.
Thanks for any help!!!
According to the photo Midland flesh seems like a perfect match.
I 2nd that motion, Midland flesh looks bout right...
Thanks Chris! I will give that P3 a try.
After reviewing the photo again, I suggest to add a brush tip of white to two drops of the color. As mentioned above, the edge of the sample stripe look like a perfect match, but the center looks strange. Is it a shadow of a fold or a darker tone because there is more paint applied?
I think Reaper MSP Flesh Highlights should also match the original colour.
Florian, I think that darker spot may be a fold in the kitchen paper where the Midlund Flesh had not yet fully dried.
Looking forward to seeing 'em, Dan
When I was looking this info up on the web I came across this which probably explains the ‘tan’ Spad XIII for Baracca that is modelled by Ares and why it did not display the rampant horse?
The aircraft shown, registration number S7206, is the first SPAD XIII to reach Italy on September 1917, and remained the only one for over five months. It was assigned to the 91st Squadron and was flown by Francesco Baracca, the Squadron commander. The aircraft was wholly the color of natural canvass: at the time photographs were taken, the famous rearing black colt did not appear. Probably the time constraints posed by war-time combat during those times meant the emblem was never painted on to the plane.
Baracca used this craft or alternately SPAD VII, during the desperate duels following the Italian retreat from Caporetto. He was also forced to carry out an emergency landing with this plane on October 25th, 1917, after having been shot by a German double-seater he later shot down. Overall he scored three victories using this aircraft, shooting down as many DFW C.5 planes: two of these were earned on October 22nd (or on the 21st according to the official records), another on the 15h November. This SPAD was irreparably damaged during a night bombing raid on February 22nd, 1918. However, eight days before other five SPAD planes had reached the 91st Squadron, and Baracca begun using one of those, with which he scored his last two victories.
I believe this was S2445 that I have modelled above.

Barrie, nice job on the Spad!!! Thanks for the info on the tan plan. Been trying to figure out why the tan color scheme.
Looks great, Barrie!
Good Gen on the Ares SPAD model Baz

Good info on the Baracca Spad Baz. I was always curious why it wasn't camouflaged.

Ares SPAD XIII - Barracca
Upper wings, fuselage and tail - Foundry Canvas 8a, Army Painter Greenskin, Vallejo Burnt Umber 70.941 and Foundry Equipment Black 101a
Lower fuselage - Foundry Boneyard 9c
Lower Wings - Foundry Scarlet 38b, Bright Green, 25a and Arctic Grey 33c
Propeller, Struts and Undercarriage - Foundry Chestnut 53a
Tyres, and machineguns - Foundry Equipment Black 101a
Engine and exhausts - GW Leadbelcher
Decals - Valom and MiscMini.
This is a re-paint of the Ares sandy coloured Barracca for a Dorset Flight regular - Ian (Chianti Raider). It is based on a combination of sources including the Osprey Italian Aces and Valom artwork as well as several internet sources. One thing I have found out about this machine, is that no two sources concur, with different undersides (sand, grey and white) lower wings with/without roundels and some with the national colours. In the end I went with what seemed right and hope that he likes it.
Finally for those also attempting this re-paint here is a plane card to match.
Gary, that is a very nice SPAD XIII! Wonderful job!
Super SPAD Gary. You've been a painting machine lately!
