Excellent work Wayne. Those look fantastic!

Gorgeous, Carlo! I need to get off my lazy butt and take a picture of my current Dr.I collection - it's grown quite a bit since I last posted it here.
Thanks for the inspiration (hopefully)!
Nicely done Carlo....They look sweet posed together.
I do believe you may well have more DR1s than I do now Carlo.
Very nicely displayed together.
Rob.

Thank you for complements but I think that now with reprinted Dr1 is aesy to do repanting.
I hope that as soon as possible also Fokkers DVII will arrive!
Bye Carlo
Yes, a very nice collection!
Wow, very nice planes all. If you don't mind I would like to ask if you strip the original paint from the WoW/WoG minis first, then prime and paint. Or do you just paint over the original and not bother stripping? Thanks
I personally do not tent to strip off the old paint on my minions.
I do tend to get rid of decals then paint over the model with whatever colour I am basing the model on
If I can get the decals off I do since they can leave raised edges under fresh paintwork. If I'm going from dark paint to a lighter colour I use Vallejo Premium Primer. Paintwork is sealed with gloss before new decals are added. These in turn are then sealed with gloss before finally using a matt varnish. I don't think you can rush these things so I tend to have several repaints on my desk at any one time that I dabble at while I work on other war-game figures. I've done about 40 repaints now and these days when new models are released my first thought is; how useful will it be for repainting? This approach has probably prevented me from buying too many models.
I do not strip the paint or the decals off my planes before repainting, and I've never had any real problems with it. It might depend on what kind of paints you use, though. I almost always use some kind of Citadel "base" paint for the first coat of the repaint. These are extremely heavy and normally you will be able to overpaint everything with one or two light coats.
Like others have said, it's important to use a gloss varnish to seal everything, especially new decals, and then I like to finish with a matte varnish to get a dull, realistic finish. In fact, I usually give my regular WOG models a coat of matte varnish out of the box to dull their shine a little.
EDIT: By the way, I do not by any means claim to be an expert. There are far better painters on this board than I. But stripping the model or removing the decals is not, strictly speaking, necessary.
Thanks very much Austin. I appreciate your input.
Here are a few more of my Dr. I repaints - from left, August Raben of Jasta 18, Rudolf Klimke of Jasta 27, and Josef Jacobs of Jasta 7.
Rudolf Klimke. Klimke was a 17 kill ace with an interesting service history. He scored one kill in 1916 on the Russian front, then became a bomber pilot, participating in the Gotha raids on London in July 1917, during which he shot down a Sopwith. Then he became a fighter pilot .
August Raben. The CO of Jasta 18, he was nearly an ace. I believe he finished the war with four kills to his credit.
Josef Jacobs. Hardly needs any introduction - he was the highest scoring pilot in the Triplane and with 48 victories was the second-highest scoring German ace to survive the war.
super repaints!
Fantastic work Austin!
Very nice and detailed.
William,
I know I said I had never had any problem not removing decals, but I just did a Boudwin SE5 repaint over the weekend and for the first time had a bit of an issue with the previous decals leaving raised areas that showed on the repaint.
I've never experienced this with any other model, and I've done repaints of Bristols, Dr. Is, Albatros D.Vs, Pfalz D.IIIs, Fokker D.VIIs, and Sopwith Camels. I also am not having any problem with decals showing on the Dallas SE5 repaint I'm currently working on. So you shouldn't have any trouble unless you're also planning on doing Boudwin repaints :P
Nice job William. I just love Dr1's
See you on the Dark Side......
Thanks gang. I put the pics up then was looking at them when I noticed the misaligned tail decal. It was the day before we left for California so was busy packing and getting ready and couldn't re-do the decal. Will get it done when we get back though. Here in California now at the hotel, getting ready to go to Disneyland tomorrow and Thursday. I've been at least 20 times, but my youngest has yet to go, so it will be fun to watch her reaction to the whole thing. Anyway gang, thanks so much for the comments and rep, I really do appreciate your input. Also, some very talented work all you that have posted. Don't know if my Dr1 obsession will reach your heights, but nice to know there's a place to come for reference. Thanks for sharing all.
Very nice looking triplanes Tim. Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic work on those two Jacobs! My favorite schemes for the Dr. I, and yours look about perfect. Really hoping that Ares will give us an official version of at least one of those during the next go round.
Nice Dr1 there Mark, job well done.
Thank you guy's for your kind comments
Very nice work Lukáš! Some rep points coming your way
Jacobs is one of my favorites.
Thanks a lot. And Dr.I ( blue/white ) Raben August will follow. Does anybody have more pictures of the Fokkers Dr I from Jasta 7 ?
VERY pretty!
Like that a lot!
Like the colour scheme - just needs the Chelsea logo on the side and it would be perfect. Joking apart - really nice work
Yessss!

Really good there Alex, I do not recall seeing the Esswein before
Excellent planes Alex.
Thank you.
The base colour is Humbrol 83 'Matt Ochre', the streaks were applied with a worn out brush and Humbrol 155 'Matt Olive Drab'.
The Olive Drab fields under the crosses and the White field in the center were masked and airbrushed.
Hmm...the close-up reveals my poor painting around the cockpit and the damaged decal
