Neat idea. Very good execution. Would look rather menacing, I believe.

"White" is fine; you can say the pilot wanted his enemies to understand who was shooting them down.

Very nice looking all-white Dr.1! Makes me want to do one as well.

    Bravo!
And the fact that is reads WHITE instead of WEISS make it even more fun, in my opinion.

Making decals is beyond my capabilities - these are by Larry at Digidecals and mehusla at 1/144 Direct, both purchased on ebay.

    Josef Jacobs:

I have seen this one on the forum so I thought I would take a crack at it. Other than the novelty "pizza plane" that I painted up, I have not done a real plane.

I print out my own decals and the plane is a Kirschstein repaint. Although I made a decal for the tail/rudder of the plane, Kirschstein’s tail was close enough and left it as is. The machine guns, wheels and prop are still original.

Here is my attempt at painting up Werner Voss's Fokker.

This is a Red Baron repaint. MVR's plane has the exact insignia markings as Voss's plane. I "cut in" all of the insignia. Only decal was the face on the cowl.
What is still original is the guns and insignia.

First took Keith's advice and painted the whole plane blue.
Removed the prop for prep of the face decal.
I had some paint left over from some warship painting. it is a cream/light brown I used to paint decks on WW2 British warships. I wet it down and used it very lightly for the first streaking coat.
Next I used some olive drab and streaked the blue several times.
For final touches, I mixed some black with the olive drab to create more of the "Fokker Green". Some more light streaking and painted the engine cowl.
Applied the decal on the cowl and touched it up with the Fokker green.
Glued the prop back on and painted it and the cockpit and touch-ups.

Overall at this scale, I think I got it pretty close to what is perceived to be the scheme of the plane he flew in his last days.

Nice job there Kelly. it is one thing to take advice, but quite another to execute it as well as that smeared over paint effect.

    Great Job Kelly!
Might I suggest you cut the "handles" off the underside of the lower wing as the prototypes did not have these.
Dont sweat it though as they probably wont be noticable on the Games Table.

    Your suggestion is well noted.

Half way through painting the plane I thought about it but at this scale I thought it was good enough. In my days of painting warships I tried to make them as accurate as possible. All of the time researching them to achieve the accuracy kind-of burned me out. Although I want a good representation of the plane I don't want to burn myself on the subject.
With that said I must admit that painting up these planes has been a lot of fun. Painting warships is fun but you are pretty much confined to a few certain colors unless you count all the shades of gray. With the planes, lots of designs and colors makes for a never boring outcome.

Here is a repaint I did. It is loosely based on August Raben's Jasta 18 DR. I (though with a black raven) and a customized tail--the plane is a present for Ling, 7eat51's wife who has provided us with so many customizable cards.

My Jasta 11 is slowly growing... CPT Manfred von Richthofen (Red Baron), 1LT Lothar von Richthofen, 2LT Wulfram von Richthofen, 2LT Hans Weiss. In the other shot I have CPT Ernst Udet flying in his hand-me-down Fokker Dr.I from 2LT Hans Kirschstein (that works for me.) Das Phantom is my fantasy creation of the plane I would have flown in this Jasta as an Ace. I explain the how and why in my description on this site. I did pilots with scarves for some, but I think I am going to change how I approached that issue. All will have detailed pilots when I finish. As this is my first attempt. I had to learn a few tricks. Three are custom (Wulram von R, Weiss & Das Phantom) and three are stock planes that I love enough to only tweak a little here and there.
