Thanks guys. I now have 7 Jasta 2 Triplanes. Not quite the complete group like Tim does but enough for me for a game table.

In the process of painting up the Raben, I think I got hooked on doing at least a flight of Jasta 18 - maybe not a Tim's-full-Jasta set of planes. I gets too much for me if I have more than 6 planes on the board. So 3 or 4 of one Jasta would be nice.

Thanks, Rob. As mentioned above I'm thinking of doing a flight (murder) of Ravens, so that (plus I need to go hex camo for my Sculpteo Friedrichshafen) means experimenting with homemade transfers. Fingers crossed.

But can't be worse than the trouble I had with the decals for this set. I needed 4 decals (fortunately I have 3 valom Dr.I kits) to get the 2 crosses for the rudder.

Thanks. Ross. Since the thing to do around here is to paint up planes in squadrons / jastas, I have a suspicion that they will be each be joined by 2 or 3 planes (my jastas are small - for now ) from Jastas 7 and 18. I already have an eye on a few of them.

You have some lovely choices in both of those Jastas, Paul - it shouldn't be hard to find several to your liking! Beautiful work on those two Dr.Is, to be sure I look forward to seeing what planes join them

    All the best,
    Matt

I really like the way you highlighted the ailerons on the Raben's DR.I.

Thanks. There’re highlighted on the Jacobs too but it didn’t show up on the photo. More visible to the eye.

    Thanks, chaps.

Rob, pity the top wing hides the paint job on the lower wing. It worked out well enough but at this scale I had to do it the opposite (light over dark) of the actual one (dark over light).

Now to replace the photos with ones that have different names to eliminate the extra verbiage. I think it’s a “-“ in the titles that’s doing it.

Yep, agreed. Very nice work indeed, especially given they are made up from Valom kits

    Thanks, Mike...three things to note:

    1) Valom are a real delight to paint up.
    2) I'm quite getting used to valom kits. I managed to not lose any photo-etched bits and to get them all in the right places.
    3) I'm still all thumbs when it comes to building the models - glue everywhere but a good paint job helps cover it up.
    4) I've learned that I must place the peg after the landing gear - the peg for Weiss's aircraft is to close for the Litko peg holder. I will have to trim the peg holder.
    5) I've got the routine down for decals - some go on before assembly and some after assembly versus all after (hello, Jacobs Fokker Dr.1) or all before (hello, Nieuport 11s)
    6) Now for a Reviresco model

That's not three things you say, eh? Well as anyone knows from literature and the movies - trios never come in 3's.

Here are my latest Valom models - Werner Steinhauser (Jasta 11) and Rudolf Klimke (Jasta 27). I used a mix of valom (crosses) and homemade decals (anchors, etc.). From what I could deduce from internet, Steinhauser had an early paint version with the red band and yellow cross and a later version with the colours reversed. I preferred the yellow cross on red - with the tail in a reverse colours. I found a photo of the early version (red in mid-grey and yellow in dark grey for the fuselage band) doesn't show enough of the tail clearly but it could have been red with narrow yellow stripes.

My squadron of Dr.I's looking for prey. All minis are originals or re-painted originals.

From left to right: Lothar (yellow, re-painted) / Manfred (red, original) / Raben (blue-white, re-painted) / Jacobs (black, re-painted) / Voss (green, re-painted) / Bäumer (brown, original with some added painting) / Weiss (white, re-painted)

The re-paintings are not very accurate, I took some liberties with the paint schemes, used just roughly the right colors and didn't add any personal markings. What you see is what you get. They are far from perfect but they are a beauty to look at because of the colors themself

I didn't like the look of the new Bäumer and Kempf from the front, this bright light blue. So I added some brown to some struts and wings on the front. I will do the same with Kempf (I think green) once Keith's package arrives.
The bright light blue didn't bother me with the Raben and Weiss re-paint as it fits their respective color shemes

Ah yes, the wing edge. I touch up a lot of wing and rudder edges. Changes the overall look of the planes after it's done for the better!
