Thread: Poll - Is history important?

  1. #51

    Default

I had to check incurable, because the few repaints/mods that I've actually finished have been historical - And all my projects in the foreseeable future will probably by historical, since there are so many historical planes that I'd really like to have as a mini.

But I'm all for the non-historical approach as well, I just haven't had the time yet.

  2. #52

Only been playing just over a month and with aircraft as scarce as they are at the moment, only have six; but I will try and do historically correct units when I can

You have to remember that these questions are nominally about the game, rather than general knowledge. Trying to relate reality and politics into something that is about fun, is just wrong. Ghoulish and trollish all in one.

Hold your horses there fella, nobody mentioned politics and your response here pretty darn close to trolling! Nothing 'ghoulish' about respecting the fallen of past wars and remembering their sacrifice. Now before this gets out of hand, let's agree to take it no further 'kay?

I totally agree with Steve's comment - fun first! When I get round to doing re-paints they will be primarily historical with some from my own imagination!

I try to get my repaints historically correct, though I would probably like to paint some fantasy ones too if I had time and the raw material enough.
In gameplay, I think scenario balance before historic accuracy. That said, I usually try to get period correct if I can, but I never go into historic detail to the extent of considering whether pilot x ever flew against pilot y, in this plane or that.

Apparently this doesn't extend to the NHL...sorry, I'm just upset by the Stanley Cup being such a let down, again. The league seems intent on killing hockey that is actually played (as opposed to fought). It's sooo boring to watch hockey were cheap-shots and brutality are valued over skill.
Again, sorry - But your nickname set me off on a bit of a rant...

    Incurable! defenetly incurable!

My project for now is doing re-paint of some SPAD XIII's for the 13th Aero Squadron of the 2nd pursuit group.

Once those are done, I'm planning to do some Albatross D.Va and Fokker D.VII for the Jasta 18 of the Royal Prussian Jagdstaffeln.

    Cheers!

I'll be sure to do that Niclas.

I'm currently in the process of paint-stripping the first 2 SPADs, and I have 4 more underway from France (found a dealer that had them for only 5.10 euro's a piece all baracca's kite version).

I'm planing of posting a step by step pictorial in the hobby section, when I have something interesting to show.

    Cheers!

I stick with historical repaints, there were too many beautiful planes that actually flew for me to feel the need to deviate.

I perfer historical. But alternative history is alot of fun and Cowman your planes are great. Your DR.I is such a "flyboy" type villian the movie should of used your paint scheme. Now I'm still working on my Italian Front. With Shapeways coming out with more planes it seems a well never get it done. Next project is going to be Bloody April 1917 with alot more Shapeway planes to buy. Like earlier post as long as your having fun "why not". Luv this game.

I like to be historical as possible in that aircraft are correct type year etc ,but I play to have fun so its not 100% important

I like both historical accuracy, and plausibility.

Most aircraft never were photographed, or the photos have long since vanished. With Ektachrome giving false greyscales and different lighting conditions, we can't be sure of the exact colours of even the most photographed ships.

Now while I can be fairly sure the Comwan's Dr.I scheme didn't exist, his Camel, while stretching the limits of plausibility, foesn't exceed them.

See for example these well-documented F2bs:

Compared to those, the Cowman's scheme looks positively subdued.

Even some outrageous model conversions are quite realistic. Like putting on 4 additional lewis guns on the undercart to fire under the propeller.

I'm toying with a (slightly) alternate history, where the Armistice negotiations broke down, leading to an extension of the war by 6 months, ended only by the 1919 Allied Spring Offensive. So a few more types got into service, and the rare ones such as Fokker E.VIII and Siemens-Schuckert D.IVs got more of a look-in.

History is absolutely crucial...but I certainly don't mind people having fun with their own paintschemes. It is just a game!

  22. #72

In my reenacting world I was quite the "authenticity nazi", but for Wings of War, not so much. Sure it would be nice to have all the planes in correct schemes, but I'm not going to let minor (or even major) differences or inaccuracies spoil my fun.

That being said, as a student of history, I am taking this as an opportunity to learn more about the period. Fascinating times, the early 1900s, fascinating times.

I want to keep history, but I also want to take the occasional trip down plausible lane.

So, mixed into the Black Flight Sopwith Triplanes of Naval 10 RNAS, a Canadian Aviation Corps Burgess-Dunne D.8 will probably end up on my table one day, if not a later, better "B-D D.14", or 18 (never happened, but... What if Burgess-Dunne built more, and better, planes?)

    Yes, please share.

If anyone is unaware, there are Ace cards on BGG:

I was more inclined to historical units until a recent post by you Andrzej in which you shared some pictures of planes you just painted. Now I am inspired to create a plausible, but non-historically accurate, Jasta and Squadron.

Yep, I have those promo cards, Eric - they are very nice. But if we could get a default card with some options to choose from we could get personalized versions and it could be a blast!

I agree. Especially given your Polish-Russian War and Carl's Spanish Civil War campaigns, such an option would be great. It would be fun, as well, for OTT-Final Months. If I have a pilot that makes it, I would print and frame his card, hanging it in my future game room.

"Is history important?" That has to be one of ther stranger questions posted on a forum for a bunch of hobbyists who play games of WWI and WWII aerial combat as well as collect, build and paint models for use in those games, research and develope scenarios and discuss a variety of topics (usually quite intelligibly compared to other forums) related to the subject. I mean no offense. I am only expressing a lack of understanding on my part. I will interpret your question to mean: "do I limit, or at least prefer, scenarios/match-ups that are based in actual history or at least plausible possibility? And, do I only collect aircraft which replicate the markings and colors of historical examples?"

    1. I much prefer scenarios that make sense from a historical perspective or are at least plausible possibilities. For aircraft selection, I would only pit aircraft against their historical contemporaries. I would never, for example, have Sopwith Snipes fighting Fokker Eindeckers or DH.2/Nieuport 11s facing off with Fokker D.VIIs. It is hard enough matching capabilities of planes from the same period, it would be much worse between planes from 1915/16 against those from 1917/18. So, YES... in this sense, history is important to me.

    2. Do I only play with models that represent specific historical examples? No, not all of my planes are replicas. Most of my planes are based on such examples and the majority of the rest are reasonable examples of what "could have existed" (generic rather than specific aircraft or with markings that fit a squadron). A few of my planes were custom made for friends or family and these are actually some of my favorites (and they mean alot to those who now have a plane with "personal" markings, etc...) but none of them are outrageous. Some examples of historical aircraft are much more outrageous than anything I could have imagined. So, again, YES... history matters but I am not restricting my imagination to the limits of someone else's.

Hope that my answer comes close to your intent.

Unless of course it was the Eastern Front around 1918-1921. Russian Civil War. Then there are historical examples of Nieuport 11s vs Fokker D.VIIs. Pretty much anything that could be rebuilt and made airworthy, was. Rather than aircraft being replaced, they just constructed parts locally and rebuilt. A White Morane N vs a Soviet Snipe is quite plausible, though a Polish Pfalz D.XII vs a Soviet Nieuport 11 even more so.

  35. #85

    Zoe,

once again, you are absolutely correct; the Russian Civil War was one example where planes of different periods did mix. The Polish-Russian War or the wars in the Baltic States are other examples. I find the mixed bag of pilots and aircraft from this period to be absolutely fascinating... and somewhat confusing! Some completely unfair match-ups are possible but are historically correct (or plausible) and that is enough for me.

i couldnt really answer this poll as none of the categories really fit. yes history is REALLY important to me. had the game ignored or flouted the history of the era as others had in the past i wouldnt be as into it as i am. that being said i do enjoy non historical gameplay as well as historical scenarios.

i havent dusted off the paints to do any repainting YET but when i do it will be almost exclusively for non historical custom paint jobs.

either way i immensely enjoy the game.

My approach is to have fun with half-historical schemes and some fantasy ones. These are just gaming pieces. So when I paint or repaint minis, let's say: Fw 190s (currently in the making) I do use accurate colours and camouflage patterns (RLM 74/75/76) and default markings (crosses of the era), but numbers and other insignia could be added freely.
So - a model looks cool from a tabletop distance, but nothing more
Sometimes I go really wild, like with my new D.VIIIs (psssst! they are decorated with WH40K insignia)...but my efforts are recognized by the model makers Take a closer look...

I try to match planes that was in service at the same time. Make historicaly correct senarios and so on but I am not a slave to it.
I often make senrios were I pair up aircrafts that never met just to learn how to fly a sertain plane against different oponents.
Or to test different strengths, weakneses or aceskills. It is fun and you learn a great deal.

History is #1 for me but I also like to paint up unique personal planes. There are so many great historical planes that we do know of and I have a hard time on settling on what to paint next. Tim is inspirational with his historical squadron sets. Someday I will attempt some myself, again the hard part for me is choosing which squadron.

Voted for the Interested category: Have been avidly into WW2 aviation ever since 2003 and two years ago my interest became desperately in need of a change of direction. Nearly ten years of building 1/72 aircraft construction kits was starting to hit the boredom and space constraints! In February 2015 when I discovered Wings of Glory I got that change of direction I was looking for ...

So knowing what was around where and when counts me in as Interested I guess

I picked 'incurable' since I've done some of this kind of repainting...seeing three or four or more planes of the same unit flying together is a real treat.

But I'm also toying with the idea of painting an 'historically fictitious' plane or two - my great uncle served in the Jaeger zu Pferde in WWI on the Eastern Front, and I'm thinking it might be fun to have him 'transfer' to the Luftstreitkraefte and paint up a plane or two that he 'flew'...

Plus, I love Ken's (The Cowman) work, so something along those lines would look great on the game table, too.

    All the best,

INCURABLE - flights of planes from the same squadron
HISTORICALLY FICTITIOUS - "Steffi", soon to be joined by her predecessors, and a Pfalz Jasta when I can get more DIIIs
