    Hi Mike,
yes, that sure would be a nice side-effect
Any chance of you making a card for the plane ?
I can supply you with a picture of Petra "Chérie" De Karlovitz for the back ...

I'm hoping someone on the forum can answer something that is bugging me.

Looking back at my post, showing the RNAS 9 "B" flight paint conversion: Cross & Cockade printed the design I have tried to copy (a cross made up of white, light blue and dark blue bands), but they do say that interpreting the "colours" from black and white photos is very difficult.

I see elsewhere on the forum, a very similar design, but with a central red stripe in the cross, rather than blue. Can anyone tell me a) are they two seperate aircraft, both from "B" flight and if not which is correct? b) Where can I obtain information on the aircraft with the "red" cross, if they are the same aircraft and the blue cross is incorrect?

I saw some photos of a model entitled "Ship's Camel" on the Web and liked the paint scheme so I duplicated it. I stripped the model first of all paint and airbrushed and brush painted it.

Lovely work on the repaint, Jim - it's neat to see the Camel 'broken' into its constituent parts! And it looks splendid sitting next to your redone Fokker DVII

    All the best,

Jim, excellent work there! How did you take it apart without breaking/cracking the wings?

I soak them in 91% isopropel alcohol for at least 24 hours to get the decals and paint off. Then I ever so gently give the parts a wiggle to break the glue bond. I work the fuselage bottoms with an exacto knife like a pry bar, very slowly and evenly. The parts eventually pop off. I have had one that was stubborn and broke, but that was one out of about 15 I have done and was easily glued back together. I am now working on a DR1...

Great looking pair of planes Jim. I have never tried to disassemble a Wings plane.

I have only removed the upper wing and undercart on a single Wings Pfalz D.III, use the freeze/boil method. The wing popped off quite easily.

The lower wing and tail refused to budge, so I left them in place for the repainting process.

    Wow Jim, that's a beauty !!
And REP for describing the method to get rid of paint and decals and the short tutorial on disassembling the plane itself

Yours looks cleaner than mine Eric. I didn't strip mine. Perhaps I should seriously think about stripping them prior to repainting.

Default Ares Sopwith Camel repainted to Otto Kesselberth's captured version

Adding to the "Captured" Bird theme of things... My version of Otto Kesselberth's captured Sopwith Camel
Now, one thing that I have always wondered about... Did the Pilots have the guns swapped out for German Spandau's???

My first repaint: Lt Emile J Lussier No73 Sqn RAF from a nexus Barker. Most successful American camel pilot for RAF.

Also my first ever decals. From miscmini.com and homemade (what font does everyone use for plane #? I went with Stencil and seems ok).
I messed up the port side "D" but will let it live in infamy. The tail is a bit wonky on this one but not as noticeable in person, let's call it battle damage.

And there is always some random piece of lint that shows up in camera lol.

Big thanks to Teaticket (Peter) for sending scans of C deck alt cards - they turned out great and I appreciate it!

'Nexus' Sopwith Camel "Olieslagers"), bought ready repainted from ebay as a German captured plane.

Undersurfaces repainted with a 50/50 mix of 'Vallejo' "Orange Brown" and "Pale Flesh Tone"
Upper surfaces 'Vallejo' "German Camo Dark Green"
    Personal scheme triangles "Ochre Brown"/"White"

    All other colours 'Vallejo'.........
engine "Oily Steel", inked "Black", highlighted "Silver"
prop "Dark Earth" with "Dark Sea Grey" tips
    struts "Leather Brown"
    tyres "Cold Grey"
    pilot "Leather Brown"

Decals - "Games Workshop" zig-zags already in place on model
'1/144 Direct' roundels and tail stripes.

tail stripe decals went on crooked (!) so I overpainted them with 'Vallejo' "Black", "Moon Yellow" and "Vermillion".

Here is my very first attempt at repainting Ares planes. All were transformed from Kissenberth Camels. RNAS 9 Sopwith Camels captured my imagination from the first one I saw.

I learned so much on this forum to guide me in my first ARES repaints…
    • Teaticket’s sharing of his painting techniques and general encouragement
    • ReducedAirFact’s PC10 color guide that informed me that RNAS Camels were a bit greener than the rest
    • Flying Helmut’s recipe for applying decals AND for listing out the paints used on his awe inspiring creations – I no longer fear any decal and my order for Vallejo Brown Violet is in
    • Mikeemagnus for early help in research – I now have a subscription to Cross & Cockade International because of their 23 page article on RNAS 9
    • Oberst Hajj for the spinning props which go on Camels like… stink on a camel

And in the process of all this… I made another new friend. Special thanks to Larry Gill for working with me on development of an incredible decal sheet to match my interpretations of RNAS 9. The level of detail and perfection from Larry was so over the top - down to different fonts for the aircraft names that match the actual photos. He made two versions of the “X” on the fuselage for B3905 “Muryel” because he noticed the angles in one photo were different than another – so he did both! He even threw in bonus colors for some aircraft markings where the photographs made us doubt – is it red rather than blue? He threw in an additional non-RNAS 9 marking just because he thought I might like to try it.

And yes he plans to sell these decals as soon as he gets his printer repaired. I'm why he can't have anything nice!
