Thread: Official Albatros D.III painting thread.

Got a couple of MvR Albatros D.III from my lad for Christmas, one has been done as Jasta 11's Otto Brauneck's with blue nose & elevator to fit in with my others - Allmenroder, Wolff, Schäfer & MvR - this one I've done as an interpretation of LvR's Alb D.III.

It seems, as is usual with these things, no one actually knows what was right so I went with the dark fuselage interpretation and used this as a guide:

You can just make out the red band between the cockpit & the fuselage cross - just need D.2006 decals, you can just make them out on the tail fin.

    - I've yet to decide what to do with the tail so left it red for now as it fits in with some others in Jasta 11 but an easy fix if it should be cammo.
As with my others I used Humbrol: 121 for the pale green, 186 for chestnut, 75 for the dark green. I painted round the Albatros decal...
Fuselage is two GW browns one over another, one was Vermin fur ?? Used a GW bone colour for the rudder and GW Blood Red for the stripe.

Been some time since I posted anything. This is a Shapeways Oeffag D111. Its been kicking around my to do bin for years. Had the decals so just did something to put it all together.

Nice work, Tony! All those little swirls would be the stuff of screaming nightmares for me even at 1/48...

...and it's complete. Normal strengh of a FliK end of 1917 was 4 planes + 2 planes in reserve.

ALBATROS D III OEFFAG 153.209 OF OBLT GODWIN BRUMOWSKI, FLIK 41/J, PORTOBUFFOLE, JUNE 1918

    THE MODEL

    This is a 1/144 Oeffag 253

The fuselage is 3D printed on White Natural Versatile Plastic (WNVP)

    Top-wing comes from a WoG Albatros D.III

The undercarriage is a 3D Printed one

Decals for Brumowski’s model are from Kevin at MISCMINI (http://www.armamentsinminiature.com/). I highly recommend all decals and other products from them.

    3D PRINTED MODELS AND ME

This one wasn’t planned. Back in the day when Neux had gone sour and Ares wasn’t on the horizon, I’d bought a couple of 1/144 3D printed AC from Shapeways. I’d built a couple of them and I really hated the process. Worst: most of the planes I’d bought were later released as official minis when Ares stepped in, so I ended up with a few odd planes… most of them I sold out (to buy official minis) and the rest ended up as toys for my kids.

But l was cleaning up the shelves last week and I found three old 3D models I haven’t painted and I had forgotten about. This Oeffag 153 was among them…

    ALBATROS D.III / OEFFAG 253 on WNVP:

This one had been stored for a long time and its undercarriage was kind of twisted (it may have been like that all the way and that may have been the reason why I hadn’t built it). The top wing was as horrible as I remember from WNVP planes: it lacked any details, no ribs, nothing. Horrible. On the other hand, the fuselage was elegant and had that “nuclear submarine” look that Oeffag 253 did have. Speaking of submarines: last year bought a 3D printed 1/72 Type VIIc U-Boat for the U-BOOT THE BOARD GAME which was all rough and horrible surface as usual when arrived, but I managed to work on it to get a decently smooth surface. So I thought I could do the same with this small bird. I also do have 3D printed undercarriages for Albatross, so I could use one of those to replace the twisted one. Last but not least: I had a WoG Albatros D.III that was destroyed (don’t ask) a couple of years ago … so I could use it’s top wing. So I decided I was going to fix this one.

    RE-BUILDING AND PAINTING

I started by clipping out both the undercarriage and top wing. That was easy. Just carefully clipped them out using a small plier.

Then I did the surface smothering: the technique was the same that I’ve done with the Submarine. I applied a thin layer of Plastic Putty all over the model. Let dry. Sand it. Repeat. Repeat again. And again. Until I felt good about it. I painted all with a flat brush (won’t use the airbrush for such an easy repainting) using Vallejo Acrylics. The painting was really nice. No “soaking paint”. Just like if it were plastic.

I drilled small holes in the fuselage for the undercarriage and in the top-wing, and I put all the things together.

    Painted some details.

    Applied decals.

Sprayed the mini with Rust-Oleum clear painting.

That’s all. It took me two days.

I'm quite happy with this re-building and painting. Fuselage sculpt is slender and sexy and ended up with a decently smooth surface, plus I think the little bitch looks really badass with its all red scheme and thee skulls

I have finished two Albatros by applying the final coat of matt varnish. Both are Jasta 28w (Württemberg). Decals by Valom.

The OAW is my favourite Albatros. It has the round elegant rudder of the D.V, but the overall proportions are more appealing to my eye, compared with the D.V.

This won't win any awards, but, here is my most recent re-paint. I was going to try and do a stripe around the fuselage, but my hands are not as steady as they used to be. I will eventually try and obtain the decals for the Albatros D.III and beef it up some more.
