ALBATROS D.V JASTA 76b flown by Ltn Diem (1 victory), 1918

Lt. Diem served on JASTA 76b from mid-February 1918 until the armistice and was credited with one kill.
His Albatros (previously miss identified as flown by Hans Böhning) was yellow and black banded aircraft.
I’m not totally happy with this aircraft: the black bands should had been slimmer, and I placed the fuselage Maltese crosses to upfront. The white band on the nose is also too wide. But I’m not re-painting the thing since it does looks good.
The Model: This is basically a 1/144 Albatros D.Va kit from Valom Models.
Undercarriage is a 3D printed one by Kampflyer.
I added ribs to upper and lower wings using stretched plastic
Decals: Maltese cross decals are from Valom’s kit.

Painting Job: Fuselage was first primed white and then I added the wood grain texture by painting with yellow-ochre with a touch of burnt-sienna oil paintings applied with a flat brush. Let dry for a week and sprayed with Rust-Oleum Transparent Paint to protect the painting. Then I highlighted the panel lines using a very diluted Raw-Sienna oil. Tranparent Rust-Oleum spray again. Then I added the “black” bands… this was a hard process of masking using Tamiya flexible masking tape. I used 1.5mm tape for the yellow lines and 1mm for black ones.
A tip: the black is not actually black, it’s a very dark blue. It contrast better with yellow-ochre. But in general terms, if you want to do some weathering over a black airplane, it is a good idea to paint it on very dark blue instead of black. Then you can add black panel lines or shadows or whatever.

    ALBATROS D.V JASTA 76b Unknown Pilot, 1918
This one completes my Royal Bavarian JASTA 76b Trinity.
I think it’s an eye catching and elegant bitch.
I like it because the white and light-blue stripes looks like the Argentine Soccer National Team T-Shirt
Diego Maradona may have flown this one. .
I was tempted to add a number “10” to the plane’s back.

The Model: 1/144 Albatros D.Va kit from Valom Models.
Undercarriage is a 3D printed one by Kampflyer.
I added ribs to upper and lower wings using stretched plastic
Decals: Maltese cross decals are from Valom’s kit.

Painting Job: Primed white. Then airbrushed Bavarian-Blue stripes with Vallejo Air. I masked each stripe one by one using Tamiya flexible masking tape… Masked all the model but one stripe. Airbrushed… then masked all the model but a second stripe. Airbrushed … and again … and again … and again … now that I think about it wasn’t that hard , but it was really time consuming. …
I’m quite happy with the final result… but the top blue stripes should have been slimmer
    The pilot is from Reviresco/tin-soldier.com
I hope you like it because I don’t think I will build another Albatros in quite some time … I’ll be focusing on SPAD VII and XIII for a while now.

ALBATROS D.Va - Manfred von Richtofen, JASTA 11

von Richthofen was shot down on this Albatros D.V on July 6th, 1917. He got shot in the head and severely wounded while attacking a FE.2nd of 20 Sqd. but managed to make a crash landing behind German lines. Four days early he is believed to have been flying this same machine ("red hood, tails and wings") when he was credited with his 57th victory.

The Mini: this is a full Frankenstein Machine made of surpluses. Valom fuselage. WoW upper wing. Scratch built lower wing. Scratch build struts. WoW undercarriage. WoG nose and propel. Scratch built rudder.

I practiced wood-grain painting techniques with oils on this one. The idea was to get different shades of wood-grain on each panel.

I hope you enjoy it. I hate it

I did my best to hide in the pictures all the little model-maker mistakes I made
    What's to hate?
It was a lot of work to begin with
I messed up with glue when gluing the rudder -- right side does have a horrible glue drop
The upper wing is a little bit "twisted" (you can sort of seeing it in the pic that is 3/4 frontal)
Wings struts are very clumsy (it was an experiment using metal clips instead of plastic sticks)
Fuselage struts are not really symmetrical
WoG's prop and hood are big and clumsy -- although that is not really my fault
    On the other hand:
Woodgrain painting job ended up well and I did learn a lot while doing it
The two-tones red for the wings I liked very much too.
I will use this painting experience to build and paint a 1/72 version of this very same MvR model.Click image for larger version.

I think its a wonderful job Ezekiel. I wouldn't even attempt what you have succeeded in and like the others, I really like the wood grain effect. That varnished wood look is just great. Have some rep buddy and promise us you will eventually let us see the 1/72 version

Wood grain! It looks lie varnished wood to me.

Moved this post from Albatros D.III painting forum as Larry's Jasta 26 decals are for D.V's. (Thanks Peter )

Noticed Larry Gill has put up some Jasta 26 Albatros D.V decals on eBay. I have a set and they are nicely printed. Search on Jasta 26 decals...

I picked up a WoW Albatros D.Va (Weber) and over a weekend turned it into this interpretation of a WoW MvR's Albatros D.V 1177/17.
It didn't go quite as expected but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out all the same.
I painted out the lozenge on the wings with an earlier style cammo then over painted it all with some old GW Ruby Red, added some decals, varnish & a Peter Pig pilot to finish it off.

The colour differences are greater than I expected, the ruby red is a little more translucent than the blood red I usually use and maybe I should have given it a coat of that first

    As the Baron ? 2 x Alb D.III (different schemes), this D.V, of course, 3 x Triplanes (different schemes - 141/17;161/17 & 425/17)... I think !
I bought a lot of MvR D.III's to paint as wingmen though.

1177/17 is depicted as all red or red with blue undersides. I went with all red in the end though it's looks a brighter than I'd like in these images it looks a darker shade in hand.

    How true!
It seems that no historical aircraft colour scheme is set in stone, and every one that I have researched has always had one or more rivals.

I have found the more research I do the more conflicting views on colors I find. Each source says they they are right and all else are wrong. Kinda makes you laugh at times!!! I just try and find one I like that I can do in a reasonable amount of time and have fun with it.

Most excellent. As someone painting roughly 10 different shapeways (Gotha, AEG IV, and 8 DVII's), I have had to blend in the 5 color uppers & lowers of the (primarily) decals stolen from Valom kits. These Ares repops came out great, thanks for another idea I can swipe, lol.
