I've been using a square brass
rod for my Valom kits, building struts and undercarriage out of it, and I've been quite pleased with the results. You can see my Pup results

here a description of how I did the wings so they turn out level... I do the struts near the wing tips first, then do the struts near the cockpit last. This method made my last Nieuport turn out a lot more level than my previous attempts and I'll continue using that method. (Scroll past the shapeways pics to get to the Valom pics.) I didn't think of this method until after I had finished the Pups, or I think they would have turned out more level.
The Nieuport also uses the square brass
rod.
Using the brass
rod for struts and undercarriage, I do think they are suitable for gaming as the brass
rod makes them much more sturdy. They might still break given a long fall, but so might the Ares/Nexus minis. That said, I still don't hand out my Valom minis for others to play with.
