Thread: Official Nieuport 17/23 painting thread.

Here's mine, Charles Guynemer's Nieuport 17. This is a Valom kit, my first attempt at anything this small and the first model I've done in at least 20 years. The photo etched parts are very frustrating and I ended up using paperclip for the wing struts instead. These closeups will reveal my errors and mistakes and there are plenty, but I'm pleased enough with the result that I think I'll finish the SE5a and Pups that I bought along with this kit.

Having done that aircraft myself I know how much the silver effects the contrast of the decal colours, You have achieved a very good outcome Brian .

    Excellent build and paint job!

I used the same paper clip substitution on a couple of Reviresco planes - you've made a better job of it than I did!

Here are a couple more Nieuports I finished recently. I've been too lazy I guess to set up the good camera so hopefully these pictures are ok. One of them is a shapeways model, I used decals from the Valom kit. The other is my 2nd model from the Valom kit - The decals are home printed, except for Nungesser's black heart insignia and the tail number decals, which were left over from the Valom kit.

On the Nungesser Nieuport I decided to try a different method of attaching the top wing than what I've done on my other Valom kits. On all my others, I glued the struts nearest to the cockpit first, then attached the top wing, then added the struts near the wing tips. On this one I glued the struts nearest the wing tips first, to the bottom of the top wing. Then I glued the top wing to the fuselage/bottom wing and last added the struts near the cockpit. I like this method better and I think I'll continue to do it this way on any others I do. The wings turned out more even and level than my others.

You'll notice that on the bottom wing there are two little dimples where I intended to place the struts, but I had to shift the top wing over a bit in order to center it over the bottom wing. If I were doing it again I wouldn't mark the bottom wing like that until I'm ready to do the final placement.

Just been perusing this thread & catching up on all the great N 17's when I noticed that the photo of my Mick Mannock N23 from way back has disappeared.
As it is the one with the Yellow Cone de Penetration I though you later Forumites might like to see it. It started out as a Kyranov 23.

This Valom kit is beautiful. But as usual, a bit hard to build.
Totally agree, but it was worth the effort true? Your Blue looks great. I especially like the Lewis. I had a hard time with that - it does not fit like it is shown in the kit instructions (as you know), but yours looks great!

The Lewis are hard, but doable.
Have you seen the Nieuport 11 with the same color scheme?

Here is the proper place for this thread (pay no attention to the 10/12/20 post). My Brother Bob and I recently acquired Series III Lufbery and he is keeping his so I decided to repaint. Sgt. R. Soubrian is my choice based on a replica I saw. Simple hand painting was able to accomplish what I wanted.Click image for larger version.

Also see here a description of how I did the wings so they turn out level... I do the struts near the wing tips first, then do the struts near the cockpit last. This method made my last Nieuport turn out a lot more level than my previous attempts and I'll continue using that method. (Scroll past the shapeways pics to get to the Valom pics.) I didn't think of this method until after I had finished the Pups, or I think they would have turned out more level.

The Nieuport also uses the square brass rod.

Using the brass rod for struts and undercarriage, I do think they are suitable for gaming as the brass rod makes them much more sturdy. They might still break given a long fall, but so might the Ares/Nexus minis. That said, I still don't hand out my Valom minis for others to play with.
Brian, how thick is the square rod you are using for the struts?

Hi Keith, they are 1/32" which is about .8mm. The product I bought is "K & S #5082 1/32 Sq Bar". It contains three 12" pieces. Oddly I can't find K & S #5082 by searching online, but I bought it at Hobby Lobby.

Thanks. That's .03125" and the Ares Camel struts are .037" and my clear spinning props are .03". So my material should be just about right... I think I might have to try cutting some on the laser.

While I agree that the Valom take some care in assembling, it can be done with a minimum of hair loss and will stand up to adult play. I have a N.17 on the bench to assemble. I'll document wing assembly attachment for the more adventurous and post somewhere.

My Valom Fokker DVIIs have stood up to game play with no problems at all.

The PE struts are STRONGER than plastic replacements, not weaker.

I will soon start building a pair of Nieuport 11s (and might do a pair of Nieuport 17s at the same time) so will see how they go.

How so? The PE parts I have bend a lot easier then plastic parts, and when they do bend, you can't get them to bend back straight. My main concern (besides working with the tiny PE struts) is lateral forces bending the top wing out of alignment.

Not really sure why that's a concern for me, since my planes never get played with except once a year at Origins.

This is my first repaint. I ended up with an extra N17 and decided to turn it into a captured aircraft. I used Army Painter plate mail silver as a base coat. Tamiya fine undercoat and Delta oyster white for the wing flashes. Testors gloss coat went over that. The decals were from Zoe. I used MicroSol over the decals. After all was dry I used Army Painter anti shine.

I printed the decals using Testors paper. I then used Testors Decal Bond over the top. It didn’t work. The decal wiped right off the paper. I then used Testors Gloss Coat instead. That worked great. I’m not sure I like the Anti Shine at the end as well. It seems to have darkened the whole model.

It really is difficult to do a silver paint job and make it look muted but still keep the motif and decals sharp in contrast.

Printing your own decals for the first time takes some degree of courage and experimentation. Glad that my designs and your prowess at printing them gave such a great result.

Decal designs inspired by this profile, though the original photos show crosses are a bit smaller than depicted.

All in all an outstanding and historically accurate model.

Originally a Baracca Nieuport 17, as it was the easiest repaint, needing only the side decals painted over with silver. I thought. The underside of the wings are green, white, and red for the Italian flag, not clear doped linen. Kevin [miscmini] custom made the decals for this and two other planes.
