Two more Valom kits completed - Nieuport 17's of Billy Bishop (blue cone de penetration) and Alan Duncan Bell-Irving. The inspiration for the Bell-Irving is from the Vimy flight plane with a small difference. I have the black stripe further back because I put the 'B 1' decal on the top of the fuselage too far back for the black stripe to be in the same position as the Vimy flight plane.

Lovely Nieuports with a clean finish! Is there an option at shapeways to add a peg on the model?

I don't think there is an option. I think you have to look out for models that have that peg included, I haven't seen those though.
@Alex: That's a very nice clean look on that top wing. How did you do that? My Shapeways look more like the upper side on that bottom wing...

I'll speak for myself... I don't add the peg on my modelsš. I figure a good number of people who are willing put in the work to paint a plane are going to use a more flexible mount anyway and would just end up cutting it off. And for the folks that would want a peg, there are options to buy a set of pegs and glue them on.

Anticipating the next question, "why not offer both?" While there is no monetary cost in maintaining two models at Shapeways, there is a time-cost every time they change their pricing or their modeling rules, and it would double the number of planes you have to look through when you do a search and double the number of 1:144 models I have to maintain.

š=one with one exception for a model that is supposed to be flown inverted.

Thanks for comments and rep, gentlemen.

    @Felix
IIRC, the top wing did not get a special treatment of any kind, maybe it's just a matter of print quality.

My first shapeways, a cool Reduced Aircraft Factory design. There were some challenges along the way but I'm very happy with how it turned out. Russian Empire Nieuport 23, pilot Makeenok Donat Aduiovich, 8 kills, assigned to 7th Detachment at the end of 1916 (Above the War Fronts, Frank, p210 -- this source lists that he flew Nieuport 21 and Nieuport 17).

Thanks, Peter. It's laughable how many attempts and methods I tried at freehanding the thin strut braces. Maybe a decal would have been the way to go. I finally got some 1mm masking tape and that was ok. And the stitching decals went fine, at least on the port side

Thanks again, all. 3 weeks ago I had no idea what Micro Sol/Set was lol, many good resources here (I mostly followed Tim's tips). Russian decals from miscmini.com and the rest I printed. The owl is clear paper over vallejo ivory, the woman decal on white decal paper. Made the stitching and access panel, was a pain. .25 micron pen for oil fill port and wheels (thanks teaticket).

Now 5 more shapeways and a balloon lined up lol. Downloaded GIMP and no clue how to make custom plane cards so that will be added to the list. WoG is cutting into my board game hobby... that's just fine

'Nexus'/'Ares' Nieuport 17 (pilot unknown), bought ready repainted from ebay as a German captured plane.

Repainted all over with 'Misterkit' "French Aluminium"

    All other colours 'Vallejo'.........
engine "Oily Steel", inked "Black", highlighted "Silver"
    cockpit rim "Cavalry Brown"
prop "Yellow Ochre", overpainted with 'transparent' "Natural Wood"
struts and tail skid "Flat Earth", strut bindings "Off White"
    tyres "Cold Grey"
    pilot "Leather Brown"

Decals bought as part of a job lot on ebay, manufacturer unknown
    1/144 Direct upper wing roundels

tail stripe decals went on crooked (!) so I overpainted them with 'Vallejo' "Black", "Moon Yellow" and "Vermillion".

The red/white chequerboard is a decal - fairly straightforward!

It was the strut bindings that were a real pain!

Super planes, Chris and Tim. Well done!

Some Shapeways planes come with the propeller attached below the fuselage on a thin stalk. If you leave part of the stalk when you cut off the propeller, you may be able to thicken it to something suitable for fitting into the top of an Ares peg.
