Summary:
Published in 2010, this 416pp book examines the two battles of Bullecourt; the first designed to assist the 3rd Army breakout from Arras in what would become known by the RFC as 'Bloody April'. While there is quite a lot on combined arms tactics from the ground in the use of tansk and artillery with the infantry, beyond reconnaissance there is little mention of the use of airpower in support of Bullecourt. The chapters take you chronologically through the fighting, with a section at the back of most of them dealing with the stories of individual British and Australian soldiers involved in that aspect of the action. While an interesting subject, I found in difficult to get engaged with the narrative, and the litter of editorial and spelling mistakes throughout suggested something of a rush job and further detracted from the overall experience. It is liberally illustrated with contemporary photographs and some maps, although the placement of some of the latter could have been better to aid the visualisation of the action.
