Thread: B17-G (Academy 1/200)

    Default B17-G (Academy 1/200)

Finally I finished one of three B17G I planned to build. I've had bad luck with the first two that I'm not keen on making the last one. The first one I made has ended up in the repaint shop because of this ...

I'm planning on stripping the paint of completely and start over again. Because of this delay I started building and painting the second one. All went well again until the last layer of clear matt lacquer...

As it was better than on my fist model I over sprayed the white spots but when I removed my tape...

The decal went of together with the tape so a new one was placed instead. After all this misery I can present you one finished model. Far from perfect in my eyes but considering all the problems I just happy its finished an playable.

I also made a custom base for it. The arc's are based on MAX HEADROOM his card. Only the arc's for the top and bottom turret are not drawn as I want to play test them first. I'll test them the full 360° and the limit angle from the card.

Together with my repainted P-40 as escort. I'm looking forward to put these two in a game soon.

Nice, looks like some frustration happened along the way. Have you tried Future floor wax thinned with windex? Yo get a nice mat finish that doesn't wreck the paint under it.

Not sure but that looks like "blush". If you matte sprayed it on a humid day you can get a whitening of the coating. Wait for a dryer day and respray it. That usually fixes the problem. I would also recommend Testor's Flatcoat. Taking a second look, if that IS blush it is one of the worst cases I've seen.

Considering the salvage work involved, I think the final result looks quite good.

Hey, that turned out pretty good, considering the problems you had with it.

It's obvious your crew chief figured out the electrical problem and has the de-icing system working again.

The first airplane was actually completely covered in white. That picture is after I tried soaking of the layer with very hot water. I could kind of peel it off for the most part. I sprayed it on a very hot and dry day. I guess it was a chemical reaction between different products used. The blush started from the decals and spread out over the whole model.

For the second one I have no idea what this was. I also looks quit different from structure but again its around a decal. I've let it dry completely and resprayed it but that didn't solve it. Thats why I resprayed the green over it.

The model isn't actually a B17G but I modified it and installed a chin turret which is (I think) one of the most distinctive features of the G version.

Well here are two more photos of the B-17. Another paint job on your next plane maybe?

I can never get enough of WWII warbird pictures, so keep them coming . I'm truly envious over the fact that you flew with one. I hope that I get a chance to fly at least with one warbird in my live. There are some P-51's in belgium but flying 10min for 250€ is a bit crazy.

You've read my mind. From the three B-17's two would be green and one would be painted like the one you flew in. Other markings but the all aluminum look is what I'm aiming for.

Perhaps try Baremetal foil for the aluminimum finish? Does anyone have any thoughts on using foil for this scale aircraft?

I was looking this weekend to look for authentic painting and markings for the other two I found out that this model was also an existing aircraft. Academy has missed massive with the LCN marking on the fuselage which should have been LGN. The tail section should have been green instead of red.

Then my eye spotted the pin-up at the nose... The airplane was called "Blonde Bomber".

My model isn't already historically correct (partially because of Academy's decals and my chin turret ) but I wanted to have this pin-up on my model. Just before the weekend my decal paper had arrived so it was an ideal test for this.

My decal is a little bit to big but I'm happy with the result.

Again Thomas outstanding work on the B-17. If you want to see more phots of the airshow go to albums. There are plenty of photos there.

I've already watched them several times . They are ideal for planning my aluminum B-17. Still not sure on the markings though. I've been thinking on "Aluminum Overcast" but some of the decals would be very tricky to make...

Check out Squadron.com It is an online hobby shop if buy from. I think the have a book on NOSE ART. Look at Books/avation/Squadron Signal. I have many of their book (a lot on tanks) but their aircraft ones are also great.
