The Final Month - Mission 12 Curiosity may kill.

"Parlez vous francais, Junghans?" asked Rittmeister Schneider.

"Qui, mon capitaine!", I answered with a smile.

"So you volunteered for a special mission know, Herr Oberfähnrich."

3 weeks later I infiltrated a Belgian Club while a celebration of Royal Air Force officers.

My target person had a preference for G&T so I served this evening "Monkey 18"-G&T from my secret weapon chest. I nearly ruined the mission, because I misjudged the G&T capacities of those RAF officers.

But 18 bottles later the officers fixed the briefing time for the next day - "due to the bad weather" - on 10 am instead 8 am.

So I got my chance to sneak into the hangar of the nearby airfield, to make a little repaint on their newest scout and managed to take off with the first daylight, saluting to the surprised airfiled tech personal.

Now I'm in the air, heading for the front...

Unfortunately there is an Entente pilot that do not like G&T.

Damn, I don't know whot those additional instruments are for.

This plane should be going much faster.

The Sopwith Camel is coming closer, but like the Rittmeiser promised to me, one of our two-seaters arrives at the moment.

Hah! The Tommy is surprised by the reinforcements and turns around.

My chance to test those machine guns.

Lucky hit! The Camels goes down.

The way to the German side is still long.

I can't get more power out of the plane's engine...

    Another two Entente planes!

One to the left and one to the right.

    Damn what to do?

Ok let's try the straight way.

Bad idea, the scouts encircle my slow plane and the first bullets hit the fuselage.

Thank God, there is Lt. Winter's Rumpler!

He distracts one of the enemies, but this Sopwith Dreidecker is a real pain in the ***!

Winter and the Sopwith Snipe exchange bullets.

My try to get all the machine guns oprerational fails perfectly...

Now none of the guns is functional.

The Sopwith Dreidecker opens fire towards my plane again.

His next salvo misses because of Winter's rear gunner's hits that shake the tripe.

    This gives me valuable seconds...

But this Engländer is insitent and the next hits cause a trail of smoke out of my plane's engine.

A curve to the left brings me out of his firing arc.

    Thank God!

The other Entente scout, one of the new Sopwith Snipes, turns around with an Immelman maneuver and follows me.

Brave Winter covers my retreat and I'm on my way to the front again.

Smoking and neatly damaged I'm not shure if I'll make it to our airfield...

    I can see the frontline...

...and another Sopwith Snipe to the right.

    Today's my lucky day.

The Entenet AA batteries seem to be good informed, that my plane does not belong anymore to their own airforce.

I can see elements of my squadron heading for me.

Come on Kameraden, I need support!

Just a single machine gun is working but it's enough to show this Engländer, that I'm not defenceless.

Unfortunately my chances to escape sink to zero when the Snipe fom the sector before arrives behind my captured plane.

My burst hits the enemy's fuselage, but this damn gun starts to jam again.

    Himmel!

Both Snipes close in on my six.

No time for a last prayer.

A second later the air is filled with AA shrapnels, bullets and planes...

Dimpfelmoser and von Fischbach open fire on my chasers.

A burst from one of the Snipes set my plane's engine complete on fire.

    Party is over.

Badly damaged, this Snipe is not willing to let me escape.

    Another salvo disable my controls.

    That's it.

    I'm going down...

Combat report of the Eagle Squadron:

Leutnant Hektor von Fischbach spotted the crash of the Hanriot scout captured by Oberfähnrich Junghans.

He & Feldwebel Dimpfelmoser weren't able to prevent this.

The Hanriot was already badly damaged, the moment they reach no-man's land.

The Entente scouts were fixed on the captured Hanriot, so von Fichbach managed to shot down one of the Sopwith Snipes.

Dimpfelmoser damaged the remaing enemy scout.[/SIZE]

Combined fire of Dimpfelmoser & von Fischbach brought down the last Sopwith snipe.

Both pilots agreed that the aerial victory belongs to Dimpfelmoser.

We have no informations about crased down OFr. Junghans at the moment.

    Mission failed.

A funny mission with many traps, Trev.

I had lucky dice rolls with the reinforcements, but unlucky ones with the captured plane.

Each button and hand gears Junghans used, did not operate well.
You can see it on the table below. Numbers are sorted in sectors (first number) and turns (second numbers).

The slow movement deck was the biggest obstacle to escape.

Flying straight with closed eyes wasn’t the best idea, too. The AI solo movement proved it’s deadlines. Didn’t know if this was the better choice with continuous jammed guns.

    Try and error table:

Royal Airforce planes after part I:

    Captured Hanriot after part II:

WOW, a great furball there Sven. Even followed with my rusty German the later bits. Can't wait for the results.
See you on the Dark Side......

As Neil said that was one heck of a fight, you really took a lot of lead. Sometimes you need luck on your side, as you said you were lucky with the reinforements but not the Plane. Excellent AAR, love the photos at the start.

That was an incredible scrummage Sven.
It was in total contrast with mine, which I will post later today.
I hope your pilot lives to see the Armistice in a few weeks time.
He could be home by Christmas.

Thank you guys, I'll determine the pilot's fate tomorrow.

One thing I recognized is, that some pictures with the new gaming mats do not have the same colour effect for the planes, like they have on the old mats.

A magnificent AAR Sven! Well written, well photographed, & full of action. Turned into a real furball there at the end. Love how you transitioned mats there at the end. And this bit right here?

My target person had a preference for G&T so I served this evening "Monkey 18" G&T from my secret weapon chest. I nearly ruined the mission, because I misjudged nearly the G&T capacities of those officers.

But 18 bottles later the officers fixed the briefing time for the next day - "due to the bad weather" - on 10 am instead 8 am.

Oh Sven - what a disaster.... but hell of a show !
The wargames gods were against you when it came to the aircraft maybe better luck next time ?! Agree with you about the old mats - they look splendid. Your anon crewman is the pilot Winter by the looks of the roster

What a thrilling AAR Sven - bad luck indeed for Junghans with the Hanriot's controls - let's hope he had better luck in escaping the wreck

I like the intro story very much, Dear Sven , but hate the fatal ending. Well, that is life over the trenches .
The report was perfect as usual
to your squadron members who were covering the daring pilot. His mission failed, but the glory is yours.
    Well done. Gloria victis.

I checked my Eagles roster and found that Winter's original gunner (Feldwebel Heribert Grötsch) is still wounded.

So I filled the position with an unknown replacement.

I still need to determine Junghans' fate...

Damn, had to replace Ranzenberger with Dimpflemoser.

Ranzenberger is wounded after mission 11!

Flash please have mercy with a harmless Hun.

OFr Junghans escaped no-man's-land and has to skip 1 mission due to his crash landing.

Just noticed that myself - then realized you'd changed it ! Mercy shown

The other guys didn't do so well:

    2Lt Ranolph Smart: Rolled 8 -3exp = 5 Injured - Skip 1D3 Scenarios; Rolled 1 = Skip 1

    2Lt Dennis Stanhope: Rolled 3 -3exp = 0 KIA

2Lt Trevor Silkin: Rolled 7 -1WIA +3RTB = 9 All well when you land well!

    Sgt Edmund Leonard Zink: Rolled 10 -3exp = 7 Bruised - Skip 1 Scenario

Grötsch was wounded in mission 8 & skipped 3 according to the spreadsheet & infirmary records - he is therefore cleared to fly mission 12 !

Indeed - confusion came up (caused by myself) because I did not upgrade my pilots after mission 11.

Thank you Dave for the infirmary rolls.
