"What was the most awkward thing it ever happened to you during the Spanish Civil War, Joachim?" "Jean Rayneau, I think..." "What? Who was he?" "A French. A gentleman. A gifted pilot... An anarchist..." "Ah wait! This is too good..." "Kyte, boys! Come down here immediately. It's story time." "Ask them to bring the bottle." "And bring the bottle."

"Where you going to start without us, my boy?" "Never, Kyte." "So? What is it about today? France? Poland? Spain?" "It's about Spain, Kyte! He was telling me about this French anarchist." An anarchist?! One of those that set bombs in schools and train stations, my boy?!" "Ah Kyte. They are probably the most decent bunch, the anarchists. They were terribly betrayed during the Spanish Civil War." "But tell us about that Rayneau character, Joachim."

"After the Summer flying with the twelve group of the fifth Squadrilla de caza, we received reinforcements and pilots. Soviets. With them came an officer-commissar. He disapproved of my romance with Natalya. He was jealous. After a while I understood that I would fly no more in that squadron. As my comrades would take off I would see them disappear and then I would wander around the base and end in the mess. There I met Jean Rayneau. He, and several other pilots flown planes that were already obsolete. Yet, they would fly them with a sense of pride and honor that few were able to maintain. Jean came to me and asked me if I would join him in a patrol, since his wingman was sick with a fever. How could I say no?"

"The planes were Furies. A strange sense of beauty and betrayal filled me." Jean said, we're leaves in the wing blown by the politicians of the world. We can only do what's right. I asked him why the slogan in his plane. It's not a slogan, he said, it's not a slogan, it's a reminder for myself when I feel my resolve weakened. And we took of on that first of October 1937."

Chamberi was below us when we saw the Heinkels. Jean saw them and pointed them at me.

Three German biplanes. I was happy it weren't the new Messerschmidts monoplanes. Those were terrible. The only planes the Republic had that could match them were the Moscas and now I was grounded concerning the Soviets.

While I was still fighting to get the hang of the Fury I looked down to Chamberi. It seemed that there was something connecting me with that village. Then I looked carefully at the enemy planes trying to see their weaknesses.

I made a hand sign telling Jean that I would encircle them and he nod. We banked in different directions.

The Heinkels kept moving in our direction in a straight line. Good formation. Germans probably I thought.

Jean was a bit closer when the first sounds of machine guns filled the Spanish skies.

He immediately took damage.

And fired back without any visible result.

And then I got close.

We were both hit.

But we payed back in kind. The Heinkels were more robust, but the Furies were faster.

We were inferior in number and Jean put us in an inferior position. Or so it seemed to me at the time.

I took damage from two of the Heinkels in a quick sucession.

But I was able to hit something vital in one of them. Dark smoke start pouring from its engine.

Then we all crossed each other's paths and I could see the German uniform used by the pilots.

Everybody was maneuvering to get a good position.

For an instant we were able to break the German formation and we had but a moment to profit from it.

The Heinkel leaving a trail of smoke made the mistake to target Jean and I quickly put myself behind him.

I fired a quick burst, trying to economize my small amount of ammunition.

The German turned quickly right and Jean was covering my rear.

He fired a mighty burst against the German pilot that was trying to maneuver to my rear.

I hit squarely the engine of the Heinkel again and flames broke up from it.

The Heinkel 51 crashed near Chamberi.

We kept on circling, trying not to be in the crosshairs of the remaining German fighters.

And then I saw them disengage and retreating to their lines.

I signaled Jean, asking him if we should engage them.

He pointed our airfield. He meant us to go home. I nodded.

"You can always fly with us, Portugais." He said when we landed. "Congratulations with your kill. How many?" "It's my third one, Jean."

And that was the beginning of my time with the most amazing squadron I ever flown with. Both men and machines...
