Messines, May of 1917 on the 2nd. The detonation of 19 of 22 mines and the Messines Ridge battle started on June 7th of that year. A prelude to the larger Third Battle of Ypres. Allied air superiority allowed up to 60–70 British artillery observation machines to cruise over the German defences at a time, despite the defensive efforts of the Richthofen Circus. The Messines detonation is considered history's deadliest non-nuclear man-made explosion. |
