"English Channel, 10 July, 1940: With reconnaissance flights reporting heavy convoy activity in the Channel, the Luftwaffe launched a raid by 26 Dornier Do-17Z bombers of I./KG2 escorted by Messerschmitt Bf-110C twin-engine fighters of I./ZG.76 and Messerschmitt Bf-109Es of III./JG51. Given early warning by radar, Fighter Command scrambled four squadrons to intercept. As it approached the target convoy codenamed ‘Bread’, the Luftwaffe formation was intercepted by RAF fighters."
