Color plate and biographical information for P-51D “The Flying Undertaker” (Serial # 44-72505); 82nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (1945). This aircraft is an F6D, a P-51D modified to perform armed photo-reconnaissance. The F-6D had cameras mounted in the rear fuselage, one facing to the pilot’s left and slightly forward and a camera facing downward out of the bottom of the fuselage, though most retained their armament of six .50 caliber Browning MGs. This particular F6D was flown by Medal of Honor winner Captain William “Bill” Arthur Shomo of the 82nd Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, flying out of Mindoro, an island off the southwest coast of Luzon, Philippines in 1945.
