Paperback Summary:
This 192pp book charts the emergence of submarine warfare in the RN in the lead-up to and through WWI. Despite little official backing, a small band of visionaries pioneered submarine warfare with as much zeal and success as their better known German cousins to develop a capable and credible force, particularly for use in the confined waters of the North Sea, the Baltic and Mediterranean. The book covers numerous individual actions, such as the forcing of the Dardenelles by AE2 and the 1918 Zeebrugge Raid. It also touches on anti-submarine warfare, and the major RNAS contribution with seaplanes and flying boats to both search for and destroy U-Boats. Appendices provide RN Submarine Flotilla dispositions through the course of the war, and specifications and details (including numbers lost) of the various types of British submarines used between 1914-18. Like the airmen above them, these were brave, sometimes foolhardy, pioneers in harm's way, using new and often barely understood technology. This book is a worthy testament to their fortitude.
