Late this year we should be getting the Ground Attack booster. It will have the Ilyushhin IL-2 Sturmovik and other dive bombers in it.

That's great news!!!

The eastern front is going to get hot. :)

I like GA thingies because they are very suitable for solo play, something that I enjoy from time to time.

Don't won't to be smart but isn't it "IL-2" and not "LI-2"??

Any news on this one ? Will it contain more "I" decks for dive bombers ? or totally new decks ?

I would like to be able to field all my stukas (or the Dauntless, or the Vals for that sake) at the same time

I do not have any new info on the release date right now. The boosters normally have 2-3 of the maneuver decks used by the planes in the same booster.

So these will be new planes?

Actually, there's an instance of a KLM DC-2 being used as an improvised bomber once -- *once*....

And the Li-2 had a singular advantage over all other DC-3s and clones: It had a dorsal-mount machine-gun-turret -- only a single 0.30-cal, but still more than any other DC-3 until the AC-47 came along. :)

During the Nigerian Civil War in 1967-1969 The Biafrian airforce used a DC3 as bomber, I know as I was caught up in the air raid!

The Israeli's used a Dragon Rapide in the '48 war as a bomber. A real pretty plane, I always wanted to do one up as that bomber.

Probably based on the British design for an "anti-invasion" bomber during the BoB (DH 89M).

Doug: What the *&^%$#! were you doing in Nigeria during a civil war!? :)

My father was building a Hydro Electric power station. We also did air raid drills at school, although the air raid shelter was the nearest monsoon ditch!

What a story!

A family friend of my gradmother (Giulio Gavotti) used a Bleriot as a bomber, in Libya, on 1 November 1911. First bombing ever, I'm told.

I wonder if there will be rules for air-to-ground rockets in this module.

Angiolillo
09-24-2010, 09:31
No since the boosters have no rules.
But you can find the rules for those in Fire from the Sky. Or if you play with miniatures (but the booster features cards only) in the WW2 Deluxe set.

I only see rules for level bombing, dive bombing, and strafing. Help!

I would think rockets would function somewhat like strafing but with longer range and better damage.

Sorry you are right. They are just in the Deluxe box/Miniatures rules.

Here you are:

ROCKETS
Some airplanes were equipped with air-to-ground rockets. When creating a scenario, you can decide that one or more planes have rockets. If so, put a rocket counter on the planes’ control board.
To fire rockets, the airplane must do either a “straight” or a “stall” maneuver and have the target in its front arc of fire at one ruler of distance or less. The ruler must be put with one end on the red dot at the center of the firing airplane and touch any part of the target without crossing any other card on air (other ground targets and planes on the ground don’t block rockets).
A plane may fire its normal weapons and rockets at the same time: but all at the same ground target. It is up to the scenario to state if the weapons on board affect the target or if it is affected by rockets and bombs only.
When firing rockets, discard the counter to remember that they have been used and they can not be used again in the same scenario. The target takes a C damage token if hit at long range, a D one at short range.

Thanks! Maybe that rule will find its way into the medium bomber box.

I used to be really into WWII airplanes. I still am but I got really into WWI and I still remember all the planes I saw at the Smithsonian. Great to hear of my favorite airplane! (Sturmovik) My Mom's side of the family has a high German percentage and her great-cousins flew in WWI and some in WWII for Germany. I actually have a book that has what we think is a picture of my mom's great-cousin firing a Panzerfaust. He looks just like my uncle!

I got to ask Doug, did it hit the target or did they just throw the bombs out?

In Vietnam the USA used DC-3's armed with 3 mini-guns for ground strafing. One was named 'Puff the Magic Dragon'.

So what other planes do we think may be in this booster? The Curtis Helldiver? The Grumman Avenger? The Fairy Battle or Barracuda? The Blackburn Skua? The Aichi B7A Ryusei? The Yokosuka D4Y Suisei? The Henschel Hs 129? Will it go as far as the rocket firing Hawker Typhoons, Republic Thunderbolts, Lockheed Lightnings or North American Mustangs? I doubt it yet because they were so fast.

I would like the ETA for this module/booster, and for "Rain of Destruction", too.

IIRC some Flying Tigers groundcrew commandeered a C-47, loaded it up with bombs small enough to be manhandled and took off on an unauthorized raid... (source: Bob Hotz, With General Chennault; out of print, my copy--which I wish I could find again--was once my grandfather's)

The gunships were AC-47 Spookys, "Puff" was a common nickname for 'em, and for a time they required high-level authorization to call in. (source: Richard Marcinko, Rogue Warrior, describing his first-tour Vietnam days)

I suppose that the incident with the Flying Tigers and the C-47, which you mentioned, Diamondback, is what 'inspired' the ending to the John Wayne movie 'Flying Tigers'.

Yeah, but what kind of party would be most appropriate? Get a few bloodhounds and organize a search party? Or get out the pitchforks and torches and organize a raiding party?

Hey ho, I guess it's back to "hurry up and wait"....

Diamondback

More like "Wait... and Wait... and Wait Some More... Hey, did that weather report just call for a freeze in Hell? and Wait Even More..." The good point about only having a trickle of new product is, it gives us who are comparative new-arrivals time to catch up.

Maybe somebody needs to recommend them a good proctologist? LOL
