It was just announced that we will get some bomber miniatures this year. They are the Caproni CA.3 and Gotha G.V. Both will come in two different paint schemes.

I am glad they are doing an Italian bomber so I can build up my Italian forces and will certainly be buying the Goth. Dave if you want a Zepplin, then have a look at Skytrex web sight as they now make one, and from the photes it looks to be an excellent model well worth getting, that is if you can afford the 180 (UK) Pound price tag:eek:

SoldierSteve
02-06-2010, 05:24
It's not just the pricetag that's scarry. The whole thing is 42 inches long:eek: If I put that on my gaming table the planes would be left with very little space to move:(

Volant Gun
02-06-2010, 08:46
Hi Steve,
I didn't think about that. I may need a bigger playing area.

Hey Doug,
Are you talking about the Zepplin Dirigible or the Zepplin Bomber. The bomber had a closed cockpit and a flight mechanic in each engine nacelle. That sucker is huge!!

Perhaps I need to redo the guest bedroom in a WoW war room! YEEEEYA BABY!!!

Have Fun,
Frank.

02-08-2010, 02:34
Yes I agree I am still wating on my DH2's & Fockker E III which I want now, but I have got to admit after looking at the stats for the WW1 bombers they are going to be big models.

Schwerpunkt
02-08-2010, 08:01
Another nice thing about the Ca3 is that it looks the same as the Ca1 and Ca2, only the engines, and hence the stats, being different. So it will stand in for the earlier aircraft easily.

Hope some day to see some of the smaller bombers such as the AEG G IV or the Caudron G4

Whatsy-digits...Sorry can't remember his name, over on the FFG site has some pictures of it. I was kinda bashing on the looks of the "Skytrek" Gotha.

I think the whole concept is going to be interesting. A giant mini may cause some issues with folks who have smaller play areas or use those Wings of War mats which are already a bit constraining if you only have 1.

The promise of true tactical bombing though could be really a lot of fun to see.

02-22-2010, 20:34
I was expecting the Handley Page 0/400. I guess that would be too big. The Caproni & the Gotha are similar in size and therefore would use the same packaging.

Hm, how many planes(paint-schemes) do we have flying the Italian/Astro-hungarian front though?

I just checked Wikipedia and it seems like both France, Britain and the United States used the Caproni bombers as well which is good.
But they were replaced later in the war with Handle Page type O's, so I'm a but curious during which period they flew over the western front, since the first Handley Page was introduced in late 1916..

When month are the bombers due for release?

Ducalutra
06-19-2010, 01:04
Does anyone know whether they are going to be in 1/144 scale as well? I really hope so!!
If they are, Gotha G.V is getting a 16,45 cm wingspan, quite a monster on the playing mat: can't wait to see it.
Nothing to be compared with the Staaken anyway: it would have a 29,3 cm wingspan and a lenght of 15. About the size of an A4 sheet. :D

Chinese new year's eves, icelandic volcanos, storms at seas and quite many human and natural factors tend to randomize release dates a bit. This could scatter releases or gather them together in the same days. If the latter happens, please delay some of the buys yourself to stay below Wife's Alarm Level... ;)

Chris, we seem to have the same approach to this aspect of gaming. I also find that a C-Max has two very handy hidden storeage areas by the back foot rests that the wife hasn't found yet.

Same here, it was a nightmare before a LGS decided to open in Cardiff last October. I'd order stuff on-line and it always got delivered on a day I had left home early.

Now I work on a principle no boxes or other evidence to give the game away. So, when I now have to order some new toys due to local supply issues it's so rare it doesn't seem to draw attention:)

I going to have a look at Shaun's bombers and decide if I'll go for the ones out now or wait for the WoW ones.

Pope, A Post Office Box is a must, or have them shipped to work if possible! Fortunately, one of the pilots in our squadron, he's a delivery driver, and he drives all over central Florida, so we tell him what we are looking for, and he finds it. This is a Win, Win, Win.

Win: I get what I want, delivered to me free - well maybe not free, a bottle of beer and a slice of pizza, plus, I don't have to sneak it in the house!

Win: For him, an excuse to paruse the gameshops.

Win: For the shopkeepers, keeps the green in the local shopkeeps and they can stay in business.

Jim, I like the idea of a Post Office Box that could save me a lot and hassle when I start buying models that the LGS can not get into stock. I owe you a beer in the mess.

Is there some kind of "board" or "page" on this site that has dates of upcoming releases? Even if based on rumors? Maybe with something like a percentage of accuracy to tell how firm they are?

If I understand correctly, the following things are due out... soonish

Revised Wings Of War Miniatures box set
Re-release of Series 1 WoW models
Bomber miniatures

On the right side of the home page toward the center, there is section for future releases. Right now one guess is as good as another regarding release dates. If I had to take a guess, based on past releases, I'd say the new WWI deluxe set in the spring, the bombers in the summer, and series 5 in the fall or winter. I hope I'm wrong and they come out a lot sooner. But on the other hand it could be later...a lot later.

As usual therewill be a very big timespan between the announcement and the landing in the shops...
Today I got my "Flight of the Giants " box which I had pre-ordered 15 MARCH !!! ( Yes 8 months! ). After a very angry letter with my store(German shop where I buy all my Wow stuff so far to my great satisfaction ) They explained to me that there were "difficulties" to get them from their supplier... they were very annoyed by the whole thing.
It seems that people that make this WoW stuff need to learn a lot about how to trade properly...

So I wouldn't get my hopes up yet :(

For my wife it is boots not shoes... I wouldn't mind but there isn't a single pair of FMB's amongst them.

I get all of my orders delivered to my work address. Then, as I go direct to the gaming club on games nights I just take my purchases there, unpack them and put them straight into my carry case. The Long Haired General never knows that new kit has arrived, although her in built BS detector lets her know that something is not quite on the straight and level.

Normally I don't make big purchases to keep them under the radar as much as possible. However, when I visited a recent show and saw all 12 of the Series IV aircraft, both gaming mats and the 'Flight of the Giants' box I just had to them all NOW. LOL. Definitely didn't get away with that.

My ground controller is still happy with my purchasing. She even buys them for me and takes great interest in how I progress with the kit building & painting and re-painting of WoW stock models. She didn't even bat an eyelid when I brought my 3 new Gothas home along with the 2 AEGs and Brisfits.

The other thing is, being single goes a long way--The Old Crab in question is a relative who I act as live-in housekeeper for 'cause she's a workaholic, and while I do have a penpal-with-potential she also both is a bit of a geek herself and knows that dealing with me means dealing with my prior commitments too, like this, AAM and my guns. (The latter two are both for professional reasons in different contexts, and if I can work up a plan to use WoW as a teaching aid for college-level History then I can weasel it in as a "Professional Resource" right alongside my Itty Bitty Ships and my .45s...)

Lads, (Veteran Husband-20 years service)
Do not stray into the hiding the stuff for long! Wives are quite good at the hiding new stuff,
YOU-"are those new shoes,dear?"
Wife-"these old things? I bought them on sale years ago".
Sound familiar? Wives are masters of this tactic, do not try to fool the master.
One ploy that SEEMS to work is trades, establish a good track record of trading off goodies for other goodies. As long as known piles are continuously rearranged by "trades" new stuff is much less likely to raise alarm.
After years in the trenches of the minis wars, I pass this on to the green recruits. ;-)

Fortunately my SWMBO also plays and enjoys the game. I have no problem getting the new ones into the house. Can't wait for the next set and the bombers two of each depending on the price. I recall being told that the balloons would only be $30 US. Ordered two of them from my FLGS and choked when he totaled them up. Having ordered them I felt it was only right to go ahead and buy both of them. Intend to be more cautious on the price of the big boys.

I am fortunate with my wife, she looks for minis to buy me. Surprised me with an entire Japanese army one Christmas.

I have used a familiar logic when buying minis.

It kind of goes like this...

Honey, you know I am going to collect all of them eventually right? I have found them at xx price and that means I am saving us a lot of money! I could get more with what we have saved....

Hi Jonas.
The reason that a lot of us are building our own bombers is the fact that as yet we have only seen the pre manufacture models, and any release information from the manufacturers is at least wildly optimistic to say the least. From experience we have found that the forcast release date can be up to 9 months out, so don't hold your breath. Someone may have more concrete info, but as yet nothing is reliable.

That really depends on which bombers you need. The Handley Page and Staaken are not scheduled, :( so if you want them in your lifetime, even supposing it is more than two weeks, you will have to build them yourself.

Too bad we only get two different WWI sculpts to four WWII... but since I play both ways (or will, eventually) I'm not gonna complain too much lest I get two WWII minis killed rather than two WWI's added.

So, if these dates hold, we're looking at...
2011 Spring: WWII Rain of Destruction box (multiengine-bomber cards)
2011, June:WW1 Bombers (Gotha, Caproni Ca3)
2011, post-June: WW1 Series 5
Unknown: WW2 Bombers (He111, B-25), WW2 twin-engine fighters (thought I saw a Bf110 miniature), WW2 Series 3, Winds of Fire (WW2 PTO deck), Ground Attack (WW2 dive-bomber deck)

Will they be a boxed set of one model each or a pair or what? Will they be like the balloon busters and have single bomber and another unique mini with them? Maybe Spad VII or Schukert DIII? That would be really cool. In reality it would be cool either way. I can't wait for these and especially the eindecker/moraines/DH2 as I love the early war stuff.

I don't think there's been any definite announcement, but I certainly get the impression the bombers will be packaged on their own; they've not previewed any other new models at the same time, and must realise it would start a riot if the only way you could get an aircraft like the SPAD VII was to buy a bomber as well....

I'm not saying it would be the only way, just the only way RIGHT NOW :P. Perhaps you get the coveted mini for shelling out the $30? $40? $50? each for the bomber sets. Then later on they release those same minis in a series.

Does anyone know what the price for the bombers might be? I would hope under $30 per bomber.

I would say they are going to be released as a single mini per box. I would love to see them each come with an escorting fighter. I'd be happy with one of the minis we already have.... say a Albatros D.III or D.Va for the Gotha and either a Ni 17 or SPAD/Camel for the Caproni... both in new paint jobs of course.

I'm pretty sure they're going to have a hard enough time moving them at the price point they're going to have to charge. Weighing them down with an albatross like an Albatros would be a bad idea. I'll bet for every person who would love a new paint job for an existing plane, there are two people who don't need ANOTHER SPAD XIII in their collection. And which group do you think is going to buy the product anyway?

If they feel the need to add something extra, throw in the Anti-Aircraft rules and the C damage deck. That would complete the obsoletion of the non-miniature boxed sets.

Oberst Hajj
02-08-2011, 09:39
I know it would add to the cost, but getting more repainted planes is always a plus... even if it is another SPAD XIII. lol The C damage deck might be good for some, but I only need the one that came in BD years ago. Also, if they do include any damage deck with them, I'm betting on the B since most of the Giants use that deck.

Pseudotheist

I agree personally I hope to collect one of each factory mini, I'm not much for repainting for modifying but I like to have a complete set. They usually do minis based on cards that are already in print. If they do rwo versions of each bomber, then we'll have two German Gothas and either two Italian Capronis or one Italian and one French.

Assuming the latter, and also assuming that the escort matches the nationality of the bomber, then the Calabria and Guynemer Spads from Famous Aces would be cool...

...But put the Hippert and Sachsenerg Fokker D.VIIs (from Top Fighters) in with the Gothas and they'd sell like hotcakes!

Oberst Hajj

If they did fighter + bomber packs, I'd personally rather they pack an intercepting fighter, like the idea with the "Balloon Busters" set--basically a Minis game in one box except the damage decks and rulers.

Or a triple-pack with one interceptor and one escort, both new Series 1 variants... that way, all four boxes plus the RDS would yield a complete "Series 1-B".

Added benefit, the Felixstowes were rebuilt from Curtiss aircraft, so a skilled tool-and-die designer could cut the molds so that most of them both would be the same parts with only a different hull attached to the wing and tailgroup. If you only have to design and cut common tooling once, it goes a long way on reducing costs...

It was just announced that we will get some bomber miniatures this year. They are the Caproni CA.3 and Gotha G.V. Both will come in two different paint schemes.

http://www.gioconomicon.net/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/max/Lucca_Games_2010/WowAnteprimaLucca/normal_IMG_8509.JPG

By the look of the engine nacelles on the Gotha, it is a G.IV rather than a G.V. Better that way though, as it starts out as a day bomber in Spring '17 before going to nights, while the G.V doesn't appear until the autumn and was apparently used exclusively at night. So hopefully we'll get both 'sky' and night lozenge options.

Those paint schemes look nice. However, to me it's a big yawn, hohum. This thread started in February 2010 with talk of the release in 2010! I hear alot of talk from NEXUS about bombers and Series V coming out soon and reprints of the Series I through IV, but no action. If this game is going to get bigger with new and more people involved then NEXUS, or somebody else, is going to have to provide the product! People do not want to get involved with WoW if they can't buy a decent plane. Our LGS can only get in stock two seaters and one DVa (Jentsch). Had them for two months. I refer newbies over there to pick up a plane and they always, repeat always, say they don't want anything from that selection. Then they ask, "where can I get a Red Baron, Camel, or DVII?" Most of them are not modelers and just want something to use right away. Even when I let anyone use any one of my planes, most players want their own. Kind of like hunting with someone else's rifle. I like this game, it's my favorite, and I want to see more interest. It's way more fun to play with a larger (4x4 or 5x5) group than with 1x1 or 2x2.

Yeah, it's great for us who've been able to spend outrageously on ebay, or those who've been involved with WoW from the beginning as we have all or most of the planes. But what about newer players or those who can't spend those outrageous ebay amounts? Well, I understand why someone would rather play Warhammer, 40K, FloW, or Dystopian Wars, because those products are readily available and renewable! Are you listening NEXUS and FFG?

Oh, I'll get the Series V and the bombers but I'm not holding my breath and I'll believe they're out when I see them at my LGS or my online GS - not ebay!!

I think I'll take a nap, wake me up when they're here.

It's not just the pricetag that's scarry. The whole thing is 42 inches long:eek: If I put that on my gaming table the planes would be left with very little space to move:(

Guy's just back from a long absence and catching up.

Here's an idea for a scenario. Place the Bombers in the center, (notice I used 'Bomber'S!) and have the action revolve arount them. As they are very slow to maneuver, it wouldn't matter. Have a set spacing that they move ahead and once they have moved from point A to point B, the scenario is over. Or they coould just not move, but that brings up relational positioning issues. Just a thought.

FYI, we have had six bombers at once and while tight, it still worked fine. Make sure there are enough pegs in height so the others can 'Tuck' under the wings of the bombers if need be.

That's my two cents anyway.

Snowy signing off!

This kind of system works really well for massed bomber formation games. I've done it with WW2 B-17 boxes several times, and it forms the basis of the "autobomber" rule in Air War 1940.

Ares just announced officially that the bombers will be out in March.

:lol::lol: I saw this movie before :takecover: Sorry, no offense intended. Thanks for the update, but, I can't get to excited over it as I've gotten tired of waiting around for the new mini's and bombers to come out that I made other arrangements through Shapeways, Calfaber, and Clipper1801. As others have stated I wish ARES much success (which will bring noobs into WoW/WoG). So I hope this date will be accurate...but, I'm not losing any  over the announcement.

If any feathers are ruffled, get over it, you should know me by now. :cheezy:;)

We're all gamers here. If we had a buck for every time some company missed a deadline, or for every supplement or new game that was advertised but never saw the light of day, we could throw a whopping huge party with lots of fine food and drink.

Or, as Alfred E. Neuman put it, "What - me worry?"

Glad to hear the news...have three of each on order from Krystal Keep in Dayton. After a few opportunities to see similar models in combat three seems right for a challenging scenario. The wait seems manageable, barely.

It sounds like we're looking at something like:

Bombers (Summer - If they ship in April by the time they filter through the supply chain it'll be Late May or June before they hit US doormats)
Series 5 (October/November)
Series 1 Repaint (Jan/Feb 2013?)

Worth the wait, but this is an ambitious release schedule considering:

1 - They're new
2 - They're launching a new line of games
3 - They're continuing on with WW2

It's a lot of product to proof, order, and ship in a pretty short period of time. I know they have great intentions, but even experienced companies with more staff struggle and they're dealing primarily with cardboard!

Really? I would have bet money that they had it changed that same day. Oh well, matters not. I'm looking forward to them be it March, April, or October.

Hi All,
Havn't been around for a while for one reason or another and wanted to catch up. I've been reading through the forum but release date for the bombers and early war fighters seem a bit vague? Checked out the Ares site and they say April for the Bombers, is this still on track?

Just looked at the first post from Herr Oberst and it is dated Feb 2010. You can see the Series 3 WWII planes in the photo. If remember correctly there were also photos of Series V WWI. Seems if there were already master models 25 months ago we should be seeing sets soon.

Bob, we also don't know if Ares got the Nexus tooling or they had to re-tool for the same thing like they're doing on the earlier series... My bet on Series 5 is sometime late summer or early fall, July at extreme soonest.

Now that the leash of Italeri's incompetence is off them, I expect much improvement relative to the Nexus days...
