Paperback Summary:
Windsock Fabric Special No.2 consisting of 56pp plus covers, 'is a study of the finish, including markings in detail (though NOT sqn or individual markings), of British service aeroplanes of the First World War period'. Sections cover: Materials of Aircraft Construction; General Finishes - Doping and Varnishing; Day Camouflage and Markings; Night Camouflage and Markings; Illusion and Manifestation; National Identity Markings; Serial Numbering and Positioning; Engine Markings; Propeller Markings; Component and Detail Markings; and, Manufacturers' Modes and Trademarks. In addition to the covers, there are four colour pages showing national markings and camouflage schemes, plus samples of VR3 Red, VB3 Blue, PC10 and PC12. Much of the detail is actually too detailed for 1/144 scale modelling however, it does provide a good general reference and also depicts some unusual British aircraft such as the A-W FK3 as an air ambulance and a Sopwith Cuckoo T.1 in a very modern-looking low-vis pale grey.
