'Hornet Squadron' does WWII in Derek Robinson's 672pp account of a Hurricane sqn in the Battle of France and Battle of Britain. Like his WWI novel 'Goshawk Squadron', it contains a good blend of humour, pathos and munadane fact, woven together in a credible and very readable account of a fighter sqn in the early years of the war. Originally published in 1983, it was subsequently turned into a TV mini-series in the UK. While not as compelling as historical accounts, it's still a fast moving and engaging tale of its time.
