The Right of the Line: The Royal Air Force in the European War 1939-1945 Author:
John Terraine ISBN:
1-85326-683-3 Category:
History Format:
Paperback and Hardback Summary:
Almost the 'standard reference' as a history of the RAF in Europe, North Africa and the Atlantic, Terraine's 841pp work charts the RAF's expansion in the late '30s through the setbacks of the early bombing raids on Germany, the Battle of France and Norwegian campaign through the Battle of Britain and the strategic bombing offensive through to ultimate victory in May 1945. It covers all levels of activity, from strategic decisions on procurement and posture, through the operational level with the Battle of the Atlantic and the Strategic (sic) Bombing Campaign and actions to counter the V-weapons down to the tactical with operations such as MILLENIUM and CHASTISE. The appendices are a bit of a let-down, with little on the evolving organisation of the RAF or a timeline of activity, so this isn't the only book you'll need on the RAF in the West, but it's certainly a good starter.
