Also Zoe, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to once again produce some decals for me for these planes? I would just be after some British roundels & tail flashes for the DH2s (& maybe a couple of large letters for the upper wing - this helps out my main opponent who has trouble differentiating between the planes when they are similar), French Roundels (including the upper wing top & bottom, & the lower wing bottom as well as tail flashes for the Nieuports. I am now ok for a while for the Fokker Dr1s, but would it be possible to do a fuselage wrap around black/white/red stripe for the Fokker E iv? If you could do a couple extra as with the current ones you are sending me, this would help with my less than nimble fingers!

I am really sorry about that Zoe. When I tried to put in your paypal address you sent me, for some reason it would only allow me to record the amount I was sending you in $US for some reason. I could not change it to $AU & figured that you would lose out if I sent you US funds. I therefore went to the paypal site & sorted it out from there, but I did not know there were merchant fees associated with it. If you let me know the shortfall I will paypal you the extra. (I would have to push the "services" button then?)

Arrived this morning, no obvious faults, more later when I get home and do a proper check.

No obvious faults - but when I took them out of the bags, it was clear that the Dr.Is were knitted.

Taking them all into bright light, the details that should have been on the wings (ailerons etc) weren't there either. Very close inspection showed that all but 3 had some "knitting", varying from barely-detectable but detail-obliterating, to really bad.

I've taken pics of all of them in the worst possible light conditions, to show flaws invisible to the naked eye.

Of the other 7 of mine, one wasn't knitted, and I consider the rest good enough after varnishing to be adequate for gaming, though not as good as they should be. It's the obliteration of the detail that is the problem, from some angles even a macro photo can't see a problem.

I'll forward pictures to all buyers, if you give me an e-mail addy. If they're not acceptable to you, Shapeways have given me an unconditional credit note for re-order, I don't have to send them pics - they know me.
If you're going to use them only for gaming, rather than for display or entering painting competitions, and you think that after finishing them they will be indistinguishable from a perfect model, then you might consider accepting them. You have every right to demand perfection though. It's up to you, you're the judge, and your decision is by definition correct.

So - please send me an e-mail to aebrain@webone.com.au and I'll send many, many megabytes of pictures to you. I'd say 15 of the 25 don't need work to make them good for gaming, but some (the Dr.Is for example) are obviously unacceptable. They'd need a lot of work for a model that won't be as good as what you paid for anyway.

When I get the the replacements, I'll send the flawed ones to you too, on request.

I did have a go at salvaging the DH5. I'll send it as well as the replacement, as scraping with a hobby knife fixed the fuselage, and some work with a round file made the wings adequate if not good. I think after 5 coats of PC10, a little sanding, and scribing in the ailerons, it will be very difficult to tell from the good one I have.

But... such work should not be necessary. If I wanted to go to that trouble, I could have bought a metal kit.

Zoe, thank you for reporting Shapeways quality. I have ordered twice for around $100 and $200 dollars. The first order was perfect and the second was very bad. So I am holding off ordering anymore until quality improves. I will hold off buying based on your report longer. It is sad because there is alot of models I really want. Colins has made some great A-H Phonix's and the Hansa-Brandenburgs seaplanes are on top of my want list. Thanks for letting us know and everyone else that orders good or bad let us know.

Note that one of the aircraft in the N17 comp is one of these duds that I spent a bit of time trying to fix. As there are only 3 shapeways aircraft entered, you should be able to pick it. Any guesses?

My bet is exhibit A, literally! You can barely see the topography on the lower wing. Whichever of the 3 it is, you did an amazing job on recovering it Zoe, all three look good.

Okay then, changing my vote to no.3. It has what appear to be home printed decals (not sure, they are damn good!) and a little tiny lump on the left wingtip common with the 'pre' picture.

Whichever it was, the surface on the 3 painted models bear no resemblance to the horrible badly printed models. Great work Zoe!

Apart from my AGO, they re-printed the lot. All flawlessly, except for one N17 with a tiny blemish on the top wing, fixable in 5 secs with a craft knife.

Yes, they even re-printed the few good ones.

If it's OK with everyone, I'll send both the good ones, and any duds you want. Some have been remediated, others I haven't worked on. I'd like to keep a few duds to experiment on for the future, but will send the lot if you wish. I managed to make a fairly acceptable model from 3 of the N17s, the Fokker E.IV, the DH.5, the CL.IV (that was a challenge!), and the N.11. The others are either with minor flaws that I know are relatively easily fixable, or the DR.Is which I'll try to fix, but don't expect to be able to.

Thanks for all the work you have done on this Zoe. I gather from what you just posted that there are now 2 of each of the aircraft I ordered. I am more than happy for you to have the extra N17 and the DH5, since you have already done remediatory work on them, but I wouldn't mind the extra Scout and BE2. great news that they turned out well this time. I am happy to let you keep any of the initial batch that you got in for me, to repay your kindness for your efforts on my behalf. The rest that you don't want (if it is ok with you) I would like to take & pass on to an interested friend who cannot afford the planes, except for the DR1s which sound like they may as well be binned or turned into wrecks/casualty markers.

I think you also still have a Nieuport 28 for me too, from the previous order which was overlooked in the posting of those planes.

Would it also be a good time to discuss again the possibility of decals? Then we can tot up the costs if you like & I can tackle paypal (properly this time...)

Can I remind you of our previous discussion about decals? I have nearly finished 2 of the previous Fokker Dviis you sent me, they are all decalled up with your excellent decals. I will send you some photos when I can get batteries recharged for my camera.

I make the shapeways to be $84.33, plus the other stuff (F-Toys + decals), plus post associated with it all.
