Engines roaring as the Albatros gallops up, gaining altitude. Mixed feelings about this mission. My wingman races along, trying to keep up with me. The Hauptmann's speech was a praise with venom hidden pouring down from each sentence. I liked it best when he was pure hate. We'll see how long this will last. Some POW British pilots escaped from a prison and stole a Gotha Bomber, sneaking inside an aerodrome and are now heading back to the enemy lines. We must take them down so that the enemy doesn't get their hands on a German bomber. But I must confess to myself that their daring feat struck me with awe and respect. I hope that others find the Brits. But as I grasp ahead a large bird flying away I sigh and I listen again the Hauptmann speech in my head.

"Get that bomber, Rittmeister Joachim, as you probably will, on account of your tremendous and stupid luck!" "Jawoll, Herr Hauptmann!" "Of course I'm not blind to the fact that you might possess some skill. Try to use it, yes?!" "Jawoll, Herr Hauptmann!" "I have been ordered to praise you for your three kills. Consider it done!" "Jawoll, Herr Hauptmann!" "What are you waiting for? Get into your plane and somehow manage to take off, will you?!" "Jawoll, Herr Hauptmann!"

The Gotha is a huge plane. Some part of me hopes that the Brits took one that wasn't yet armed and another part of me considers that plain bad sportsmanship.

As we close in, I almost feel pity for those pilots. What a daring and courageous feat. Well, let's do what duty demand us to be done. I arm my twin weapons.

Like a huge condor the Gotha banks to faces us. I have the feeling that its machine guns are armed and well manned. It is better this way. I'd hate to shoot down these gentlemen if they were unarmed and unable to fight back.

A trail of bullets crosses the air between us as the frontal gunner studies the range of the Gotha's weapons.

My wingman waits until he's at range and then he lets go a long burst. A clear hit. The Brit fires back but fails to hit the Albatros.

I let go a short burst while I pass the gigantic bird and I miss completely! The Gotha's frontal gun punishes me heavily. Tough luck. I can see my wingman being hit by the bomber's rear gun as he speeds away from its range.

After an immelmann I get back to him. Once again my weapons seem to make little damage while I get punished heavily by the rear weapon. But I endure. My wing man is too far away to help me.

The Gotha is trying to out maneuver us while trying to reduce the distance to the enemy lines. I go for another immelman although I already have a lot of damage.

Then he gets out of luck. My wingman injures the rear gunner but in the exchange his plane gets so pounded that it is a miracle how he's still flying. I reduce the distance and go for a long burst.

As my wingman moves away limping, I take down the Gotha. I follow him while he crash lands. I bank my wings left and right in a salute and I go back to the aerodrome hoping that the Brits are okay and that maybe they will be able to escape prison. My fourth kill. Strangely it doesn't make me that joyful...

After Action Report

I played my fifth solo scenario with my pilot - Rittmeister Joachim.
I was finally capable of using Flight of Giants rules and I loved it a lot! I must build my paper Handley Page 0/400 and the other Gotha soon.

I used again this new table that I added to the Richard Bradley Solo Rules:

Die Roll: --------- 1 --------------------------- 6 --------
1/12 Stall/Straight/Stall --------- Straight/Straight/Loop
2/3 Hard Turn R./Stall/Hard Turn R. -- Straight/Straight/Loop
5/4 Straight/Loop/Straight -------- Straight/Loop/Straight
6/7 ---------------------- No changes ----------------------
8/9 Straight/Loop/Straight -------- Straight/Loop/Straight
10/11 Hard Turn L./Stall/Hard Turn L. -- Straight/Straight/Loop

I played with my wingman (Willarm) that it is also controlled by the solo rules. This time he stood away from the fray for a long time but it felt good and natural as he was circling the heavy and slow target.

To balance the fact that I don't control my wingman I gave myself an ace rule - Deadly Aim. One of the cards of damage I deal gives +1 damage if it's not a zero.

The Gotha's used the K deck solo rules with two mods. I rolled a 1D6 die every turn. On a roll of 4-6 the Gotha would try to move away into the Entante territory.

If in the 10th turn the Gotha was still flying he had escaped.

Characters in the Campaign:

Rittmeister Joachim - 4 Kills Ability: Deadly Aim
Leutnant Willarm - 1 Kill

Hauptmann Schroeder (Jasta 23 Operational Officer)

Another interesting experiment with your solo rule set Joaquim.
i like the scenario you came up with to enable you to pit your Albatros against the Gotha. It is always interesting to find out what happewns between aircraft that never actually met in real life.
Thanks for the report.
Rob.

Finally I have read the AAR and - hats off, Joaquim! Two things: You are a gifted story teller, I swear! The scenario you invented is, well, somehow breathtaking!
The second - HOW DID YOU MAKE SUCH A BEAUTIFUL GOTHA? I see it's made of paper, but - man - it's lovely! Damn, how did you make it?:thumbsup::thumbsup::salute:

Thanks, Andrzej, it was a funny scenario to play.

One of these days, I'll print one and build it for you ;)
