Biography Format:
Hardback & Paperback Summary:
The latest in a line of books written or edited by Peter Kilduff on Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, with this one written in 2007. In 286pp, Kilduff details MvR's family history and life, drawing on accounts left by his mother, contemporaries and the man himself. It's the most detailed examination of his early life that I've read, before really getting into its stride in examining his flying career, both as a pilot and a leader, before a wrap-up of the potential claimants to MvR's demise, in which he debunks the 'killed on the ground' accounts written in the 1930s and comes down on the side of Sgt Cedric Popkin, 24th MG Coy AIF, as the most likely candidate as the man who downed the Red Baron. An easy and enjoyable read, with 32 pages of photographs and illustrations.
