We juat played our 1st early war fight courtesy of the new planes comming out from shapeways.
The senario was that a Caudron G4 (xd manouver deck, B/- guns and 15 hp) was on a reconaissance mission escorted by a Vickers Gunbus (xc, B, 11) and an FE2b (G, B/B,14, no immelmann)). They had to fly the length of a 9 ft. table photograph the target and return the length of the table. They were initially opposed by 2 EIIIs (R, B, 11) and were joined by a Halberstadt DII (P, B, 11) just as the Allies reached their target.

At the start things went swimmingly for the allies as the G4 bulled through the Germans with its escorts getting in some shots as well. But with the escort planes being manouvering for shots the G4 quickly got out in front by itself. It successfully photographed its target and there was a 6 plane furball as the G4 turned for home.
The Gunbus both took and dished out a lot of damage while the FE2b (piloted by yours truely) found itself unable to shoot due to overlapping bases or friendly planes blocking shots. It wasn't even shot at though it was mixing things up as much as anyone else.

Things went bad the the G4 in a hurry. 1st a shot killed the gunner then an Eindekker with jammed guns collided with it. The EIII flew on without damage but the G4, having obsorbed a lot damage already, broke up, falling to the ground in flames. (the damage from the collision sent it down, that the card had a flame marker on it just seemed poetic justice to us)
As the German pilot was pumping his fist in victory the Gunbus got in a burst, setting him on fire. The next turn he followed his prey spiralling down in flames.
With the Gunbus pilot crowing "What Fokker scourge", the 2 surviving German planes turned on him. Trying to relieve the presure on the Gunbus, the FE2b swooping in and had a head on close range pass with the other Eindekker. As we pulled our 2 B cards each, I remarked that this was the 1st damage I'd taken. I should have known better. The 1st card was KABOOM! The German pilot showed me his damage from the exchange; 0 & 0.

The EIII and the Halberstadt then turned back to the Gunbus. The Gunbus was very slow so they had no trouble catching it but the gunbus proved to be a difficult opponent. It was so slow they kept overshooting it and tailing it was impossible. They put a lot of shots into it but the last British plane stubbornly refused to go down. Timely gun james and the German players getting in each others way meant that the gunbus successfully traversed the 6+ feet of table and escaped with 8 points of damage from 15 hits. The surviving Eindekker also had 8 points of damage while the Halberstadt had only slight damage.

Everyone remarked that this was on of the most fun games we've had in a while and I think a number of gunbus purchases are in the works.

Enjoyed the AAR very much. It is nice to see these earlier planes starting to come into their own, just before the Ares release of the early planes.

 Well done Tim & great report!
Never underestimate the old Gunbus.
In one of our Early War Games one Gunbus shot down all 4 German Aircraft. Mind you it had some help but delived the Coup de Grace to all of them!;)

Never underestimate the old Gunbus.
Absolutely.

Get in front of it, you die. Get behind it, it dies. Getting behind it is hard. Remember, B armament is standard, it has the same firepower as you, a far wider firing arc, it's just a little slow. That's not a disadvantage unless in a pursuit. Getting into a turning duel means that unless you already start in the rear arc, it's using you for target practice until you get behind it, and you can easily take 6 B cards before then.

You have to use altitude - but that means climbing sometimes, and that means 2 60' turns + climb (120') vs 3 45' turns (135'). So you have to keep your distance, get behind and above/ just below while out of range, then swoop in. Tricky - especially when it's not alone. A Roland C.I can take it on, but others have to be careful.

I think it's modelled accurately as is.
